Exploring Brač on a Cruise Call

Independent with some planning or transport. Cruise calls listed simply as “Brač Island” may use Pučišća, Sumartin or another small harbour. Smaller vessels may berth directly, while others may anchor and tender passengers ashore. Check the ship’s daily programme before arranging transport, because the landing point determines which parts of the island are realistic.

Both Pučišća and Sumartin are compact and easy to explore on foot. Reaching Bol, Zlatni Rat or the island’s mountain viewpoints requires a taxi, pre-arranged driver or organized excursion. Public buses are useful for longer stays but may not run frequently enough for a short port call.

Getting from the Port

• Pučišća: Passengers arrive beside the waterfront settlement. The harbour, stone houses, parish church and Stonemasonry School are within walking distance, although some lanes climb steeply away from the water.
• Sumartin: The village surrounds its small harbour, so the waterfront, church and nearby coves are accessible on foot. The eastern end of Brač is relatively quiet, and taxis should ideally be arranged in advance.
• Other landing points: If the ship uses Bol, Milna or Supetar, follow the onboard information rather than directions for Pučišća or Sumartin.

Best Ways to Spend Your Time

Explore Pučišća and Its Stoneworking Heritage

Pučišća is the strongest independent option when passengers land there. Walk around the deep, sheltered bay, examine the pale limestone buildings and continue to the Stonemasonry School, where traditional hand-carving remains part of the town’s identity. Visitor access to working areas is not guaranteed, so confirm locally before entering. Allow 1.5–2.5 hours for a relaxed visit.

Stay Local in Sumartin

Sumartin offers a low-key port call rather than a long list of major sights. Explore the harbour, waterfront lanes and Franciscan church, then continue to a nearby rocky or pebble cove if time and weather permit. Allow roughly 1.5–3 hours. This is easy independently, but footwear suitable for uneven shorelines is useful.

Visit Bol and Zlatni Rat

Bol combines an attractive waterfront with Zlatni Rat, the island’s best-known pebble beach. The beach lies about 2 km (1.2 mi) west of Bol harbour and is reached by a mostly level coastal promenade through pine trees. Allow at least 3–4 hours in Bol, excluding the drive from the ship’s landing point.

From eastern or northern Brač, use a pre-arranged taxi, private driver or organized excursion. Road journeys cross hilly island terrain, and relying on an infrequent return bus is risky during a short call. Zlatni Rat is exposed to wind and currents; choose the sheltered side of the spit and follow local swimming conditions.

Island Viewpoints and Villages

A scenic drive can combine inland stone villages with Vidova Gora, Brač’s highest summit at approximately 778 m (2,552 ft). The viewpoint looks across the southern coast toward Zlatni Rat and neighboring islands. This is best treated as a guided or pre-arranged driving excursion because there is no dependable cruise-oriented transport at the summit. Allow approximately 3–5 hours, depending on the harbour used.

Blaca Hermitage

The historic Blaca Hermitage occupies a remote valley on the island’s southern side. Access involves a drive or boat approach followed by walking over rough, rocky ground. It is not a practical spontaneous outing from the harbour; choose an organized excursion that coordinates transport, walking time and confirmed visitor access. Sturdy shoes and moderate mobility are required.

Pučišća Harbour and Stone Village Walk

Route: landing point or harbour waterfront → Stonemasonry School exterior → western waterfront → central harbour → Church of St Jerome → uphill stone lanes and viewpoints → return along the harbour.

The flexible circuit is approximately 2–3 km (1.2–1.9 mi), with 35–50 minutes of pure walking. Allow 1.5–2.5 hours with stops. The waterfront is generally easy, but the upper lanes include slopes, steps and polished or uneven stone. Return directly downhill to the harbour, keeping at least 30 minutes before the required boarding time.

Sumartin Harbour Walk

Route: harbour landing area → waterfront → Franciscan church → village lanes → coastal edge or nearby cove → return to the harbour.

Expect approximately 2–3 km (1.2–1.9 mi) and 35–50 minutes of pure walking. Allow 1.5–2 hours with stops. The route is easy to moderate, with some inclines and uneven coastal surfaces. Do not continue to a distant beach unless the route and return time have been confirmed locally.

Practical Tips

• Confirm the exact landing harbour and whether the call uses tenders before making independent plans.
• Pre-book transport for Bol, Vidova Gora or a wider island tour; taxis may be limited near the smaller harbours.
• Carry water, sun protection and shoes suitable for limestone streets and pebble beaches.
• Allow extra time for winding island roads and, where applicable, the tender journey.
• For independent trips beyond the port village, aim to return at least 60–90 minutes before the ship’s all-aboard time.
