Until the 20th century, Bruinisse's economy was based on mussel fishing and agriculture. Shipping started to develop in the late-19th century after the harbor was enlarged twice (in 1872 and 1912).
Jachthaven Bruinisse (Bruinisse Marina) is one of the largest in Holland, with 1000+ slots/berths (moorings for yachts and pleasure boats). The modern and premium facility offers services like boat rental/sales, access to companies specializing in vessel repairs/fittings, laundry and sanitary facilities, dining venues (Cafe and Restaurant), gas station, recreation facilities (swimming pool, outdoor playground for kids), watersports activities, free Wi-Fi.
The settlement was established in the mid-15th century and its lands originally formed an island. The island's salt marshes were soon poldered (separated from the surrounding water by dikes and drained) and on the village started to grow on the reclaimed land.
Bruinisse was severely damaged during World War II (1939-45) as the Germans inundated the area in February 1944 and the Allies (the British and the Americans) bombed it in January 1945. Bruinisse again suffered damages from extensive flooding in 1953 (Jan 31-Feb 1), during the Watersnoodramp (North Sea flood, caused by a heavy storm surge) when Holland's dikes were overwhelmed.
