Dominica's Cabrits National Park is located on a peninsula in the northeast of the island. It is covered in a dry forest and separated from the mainland by marshland, which attracts doves, herons and various migrating birds. Cabrits protects wetlands, tropical forest and coral reefs. There are hiking trails and an English garrison named Fort Shirley. The park was established in 1986 and occupies 531 hectares (1313 acres).

Cabrits is also an extinct volcano which was once its own isle, independent from mainland Dominica. Later, it was connected to the island by sweeping in of material from Prince Rupert Bay and Douglas Bay. The word "Cabrits" derives from "goat" (in French, Portuguese and Spanish) and is a reference to the domestic animal that had been native to Cabrits. Goats were introduced to the island by sailors, who set them free to grow so that there would be meat when they returned.
