Independent sightseeing limited. Cosmoledo is a remote expedition stop where the main experiences are seabird watching, Zodiac exploration, beach landings and snorkelling. Join the ship’s expedition activities: there is no conventional town sightseeing circuit or practical public transport network.

Plan around the programme announced onboard rather than a fixed full-day itinerary. Tides, swell and wind determine which islands can be approached, whether passengers can land and where water activities are possible.

Getting Ashore

Expect an offshore anchorage and transfers by Zodiac or similar expedition boat rather than a walk-off cruise terminal. The landing site is selected for the conditions; a scheduled call does not guarantee a landing on a particular island.

Beach landings may involve stepping into shallow water. You must be able to board a small boat and negotiate sand or uneven coral terrain. Ask the expedition team about assistance and suitability before joining.

Cosmoledo’s eco-camp is separate from the cruise operation. Do not assume its facilities, meals or activities are available to visiting cruise passengers.

Best Ways to Spend Your Time

Zodiac Exploration

A guided boat outing offers views of the lagoon, island shores and seabirds without requiring an extended walk. Watch for turtles in shallow water, although sightings are never guaranteed. Lagoon access depends on tidal depth, and the expedition team may choose a different route or remain outside the reef.

This is a useful choice for passengers who prefer less walking, but boat boarding and a potentially wet or bumpy ride still require consideration.

Guided Seabird Walk

Where landing is permitted, join a naturalist to observe boobies, terns and other coastal birds. Previous expeditions have explored South-West Island, but the island visited on your call will depend on access and wildlife considerations.

A short landing of around an hour can provide a worthwhile introduction; the actual time ashore is set onboard. Walking may be slow over soft sand, coral rubble and vegetation. Stay with the guide, avoid nests and leave clear space for birds to move.

Reef Snorkelling

If offered by your ship, a supervised snorkelling session is a practical way to see reef fish and coral. Sites are chosen according to visibility, currents and sea conditions; an outer-reef session may be possible even when an island landing is unsuitable.

Check the required swimming ability, equipment provision and boat-entry arrangements before signing up. Do not enter lagoon channels or swim independently from a landing beach. Scuba diving requires an operator that specifically provides it and should not be assumed available during a normal expedition call.

Beach Time and Shore Photography

A permitted beach landing may allow a short shoreline stroll, photography or time sitting beside the lagoon. Keep within the area identified by the expedition team and return to the designated pickup point.

Treat swimming as a separate activity requiring approval: an accessible beach does not automatically have safe swimming conditions. Shade can be limited, and this is not a serviced beach-resort stop.

Walking and Return Arrangements

A fixed self-guided walking tour is not practical because landing locations, permitted areas and available time vary. Follow the route briefed by your guides rather than attempting to cross an island or reach another landing beach independently.

Return on the boat assigned by the expedition team. Tidal access can create a limited operating window, so be at the pickup point at the stated time. Do not plan a separate boat transfer to Aldabra or another atoll during the call.

Practical Tips

• Bring drinking water, sun protection, a hat and a waterproof bag for cameras or phones.
• Wear secure footwear suitable for the announced landing; loose sandals are awkward on coral rubble and during boat transfers.
• Carry binoculars for birdwatching and a light waterproof layer for spray or showers.
• Follow onboard footwear-cleaning and wildlife instructions. Leave shells, coral and other natural material in place.
• Expect activities to change during the day. A Zodiac outing, landing and snorkelling session may be alternatives rather than three guaranteed activities.
