Craobh Haven (Scotland)

Independent with some planning or transport. Craobh Haven is a small marina village rather than a conventional cruise port. Passengers normally come ashore by tender, and there is no cruise terminal or substantial sightseeing area beside the landing point. The marina and village are easy to explore on foot, but most of Argyll’s principal attractions require a pre-arranged excursion, taxi or private vehicle.

Craobh Haven suits passengers interested in coastal scenery, wildlife and prehistoric sites. It is less suitable for spontaneous independent touring because taxis are limited and the nearest public bus stops are on the A816, away from the marina.

Getting Ashore and Around

• Arrival: Small cruise ships generally anchor offshore and transfer passengers to the marina area by tender. Tender operations can be affected by wind and sea conditions.
• On foot: The marina, waterfront and compact village are immediately accessible after landing. Paths may be wet, uneven or slippery in poor weather.
• Public transport: Services between Oban and Lochgilphead use the A816, approximately 2–3 km (1.2–1.9 mi) from the marina. Timetables are limited and rarely convenient for a short port call.
• Taxis: Do not expect taxis to wait at the landing point. Reserve transport in advance, preferably with an agreed return time.
• Ship excursions: These are normally the simplest option for Kilmartin Glen, Oban or a wider scenic tour.

Best Ways to Spend Your Time

Explore Craobh Haven on Foot

Allow 1–2 hours for an unhurried circuit around the marina, causeways and village waterfront. The main attraction is the setting: sheltered water, boats and views towards the islands of Shuna, Luing, Scarba and Jura when visibility is good. This is the easiest independent option and involves no transport risk.

Kilmartin Glen and Museum

Kilmartin Glen is the most rewarding nearby land excursion. It contains standing stones, stone circles, burial cairns and other prehistoric monuments, with Kilmartin Museum providing useful context. Allow approximately 3–4 hours including transport and selected sites.

The village of Kilmartin is roughly 14 km (8.7 mi) from Craobh Haven. The monuments are spread across the glen, so a taxi, private guide or organized excursion is preferable. A focused visit can combine the museum and churchyard with Temple Wood Stone Circle and the Nether Largie cairns. Some paths cross grass and farmland and may be muddy.

Arduaine Garden

Arduaine Garden lies approximately 6 km (3.7 mi) north of the marina and is practical as a short pre-arranged taxi outing when open. Allow around 1.5–2.5 hours including transport. Its paths pass through woodland and planted gardens to coastal viewpoints; the lower garden is the easier section, while other paths include slopes and uneven ground. Confirm seasonal opening before leaving the ship.

Scenic Coastal and Wildlife Boat Trip

Local waters contain small islands, tidal channels and habitats used by seals, seabirds and occasionally porpoises. A pre-booked boat trip can be an excellent choice, but departures are weather-dependent and should not be assumed to operate on every cruise-call day. Use an excursion timed specifically around the ship’s tender schedule.

Oban

Oban is approximately 35 km (22 mi) north of Craobh Haven. A road transfer commonly takes about 40–50 minutes each way, depending on traffic. Its harbourfront, shops, seafood venues and viewpoints can fill several hours, but the return journey consumes a significant part of a short call. A ship excursion or pre-booked vehicle is safer than relying on the limited bus service.

Self-Guided Marina and Village Walk

Difficulty: Easy, with occasional uneven or wet surfaces

1. Tender landing and marina: Begin beside the marina and follow the waterfront for views across the pontoons.
2. Marina causeways: Walk around the connected harbour area, remaining on public routes and clear of working pontoons.
3. Village waterfront: Continue towards the rows of white houses facing the water.
4. Harbour viewpoints: Pause at open viewpoints towards Shuna and the surrounding islands.
5. Village centre: Pass through the compact settlement before returning to the marina by the same general waterfront route.

The route can be shortened easily if tender queues begin forming. There is no need to continue to the A816: the connecting road has little sightseeing value and adds several kilometres of walking.

Practical Tips

• Wear waterproof clothing and shoes with good grip; West Coast weather can change quickly.
• Mobile reception and local transport availability may be inconsistent.
• Confirm museum, garden and boat-trip operations for the date of the call, particularly outside the main visitor season.
• Do not plan an independent trip to Kilmartin or Oban without confirmed outbound and return transport.
• Allow extra time for the final tender. Follow the ship’s stated last-tender time rather than treating the published departure time as the deadline.
