Dalyan is a port town located between Fethiye and Marmaris on Turkey's south-western coast (Eastern Mediterranean Sea).

In 1987, Dalyan achieved international reputation when developers started building a new luxury hotel on İztuzu Beach. The beach is a breeding ground for an endangered species - the loggerhead sea turtle. The incident created international coverage. The development project was ceased. In 1988, the beach and hinterland were declared protected area.

  • Town's life revolves around Dalyan Cayı River flowing right through Dalyan. Ships going up and down the river are the preferred means of transport.
  • In addition to its attraction as a renowned tourist destination, the region is also a highly productive agricultural zone. Cotton was intensively grown, but has been largely replaced by pomegranate. Many other fruits (especially citrus) and vegetables are grown in the area around Koycegiz, which are all in the market on Saturdays, when villagers come to sell their products from miles around.
  • Above the river's sheer cliffs are the facades of Lycian tombs - cut from rock around 400 BC. The ruins of the ancient city Kaunos are located a boat trip across the river.

To the south of Dalyan is the fanous Iztuzu Beach - an area popular for sunbathing and swimming. Regular boat tours and minibus trips are available to the beach. Tourists should be aware of wooden stakes in the beach that mark sea turtles' nesting sites. The route is especially scenic, with views of Sulungür Lake. In 2011, Zoover ranked Dalyan and Iztuzu Beach Europe's "Best Beach Destination".

Exploring Dalyan During a Cruise Call

Dalyan’s main attractions are its reed-lined river, cliff-cut tombs, Kaunos archaeological site and İztuzu Beach. The most practical visit combines a river trip with either the ruins or time on the beach. Trying to include every attraction can leave little room for the journey back to the ship.

Independent sightseeing requires some planning and transport. The town center is easy to explore on foot once you reach it, but the beach and archaeological site require separate transfers. An organized excursion is preferable when your call involves an offshore anchorage and coordinated boat connections.

Getting Ashore and Around

Dalyan town stands inland beside the river, rather than directly on the open coast. Do not assume that a call listed as “Dalyan” brings you alongside the town’s waterfront. Confirm your ship’s anchorage or landing point, whether tendering is involved, and how passengers reach the river boats or town.

The shallow river approach is served by small local boats. Your cruise arrangements may include a boat transfer or excursion from the coast; the departure and return points matter more than the port map marker. Walking from a coastal landing to Dalyan town is not a practical sightseeing plan.

In town, sightseeing boats depart from the riverfront. Seasonal shared boats serve İztuzu Beach, while dolmuş minibuses provide a road alternative from the center. Confirm current departures and return arrangements before setting out. A taxi or private transfer can offer more control over a road journey, but agree the pickup location and time in advance.

Best Ways to Spend Your Time

River Scenery and the Rock Tombs

A small-boat trip through the reed channels is the most characteristic Dalyan experience. The tomb facades can be viewed from the river, and there are also good views across the water from the town waterfront. Seeing the tombs does not require a climb to them.

For a shorter outing, arrange a river cruise with a clearly agreed duration, then leave time for a waterfront meal or stroll. For a longer outing, combine the boat journey with one main stop. Check whether an advertised “Kaunos” trip includes entry to the archaeological site or simply passes the tombs.

Kaunos Archaeological Site

Kaunos is the best choice for passengers interested in ancient ruins. Highlights include the theater, Roman baths and remains overlooking the former harbor landscape. Allow approximately 1.5–2 hours inside the site, plus access and return travel.

From Dalyan town, independent access involves crossing the river by a small boat or ferry and continuing on foot. Depending on the landing used, allow roughly 15–30 minutes to walk to the entrance. Confirm the crossing point and return service locally.

Moderate walking: expect uphill sections, uneven surfaces, steps and exposed ground. Wear sturdy shoes and carry water. The optional acropolis climb adds effort and is best omitted during a tight call or very hot weather.

İztuzu Beach

İztuzu is the main option for swimming, sand and a quieter nature-focused visit. From Dalyan town, allow approximately 30–45 minutes each way by river boat, depending on the service and stops. A beach outing with 1.5–2 hours on the sand generally needs around 3–4 hours from town, including some waiting time.

Boats and road transport reach different ends of the beach. Return from the arrival point unless you have deliberately arranged another pickup; walking along the beach to find a different service can consume valuable time.

The beach is a protected turtle-nesting area. Keep clear of marked nests, follow posted rules and do not feed or approach turtles. Wildlife sightings are not guaranteed. Check swimming conditions before entering the sea.

Dalyan Town and a Riverside Lunch

If your transfer brings you into town, a relaxed waterfront visit is the simplest independent option. Spend 1–2 hours viewing the tombs across the river, browsing central shops and stopping for lunch. This works particularly well after a short boat trip or when you prefer to avoid the heat and uneven terrain at Kaunos.

Self-Guided Walking Tour

Easy Dalyan Center and Riverfront Walk

Start and finish: the central riverboat jetties, once your transfer has brought you into Dalyan town. This is a town walk, not a route from an offshore anchorage or coastal landing.

  1. Start at the central jetties and identify the exact meeting point for your return boat.
  2. Walk to the central mosque and surrounding square.
  3. Browse the nearby shopping streets for local products and small souvenirs.
  4. Return to the riverfront and follow the accessible waterfront paths.
  5. Pause at an open viewpoint facing the cliff-cut tombs across the river.
  6. Stop at a riverside café, then retrace your route to the departure jetty.

Distance: approximately 1–2 km (0.6–1.2 mi), depending on detours. Pure walking time: 20–40 minutes. Recommended total: 1–1.5 hours, or longer with a meal. The central route is mostly flat, with occasional uneven paving and limited shade. Where waterfront access ends, return via the adjacent streets.

Choosing an Organized Excursion

A coordinated river-and-beach excursion is a sensible choice when the ship remains offshore. A ruins-focused trip suits passengers who prefer Kaunos to swimming. Check the amount of walking, actual beach time and whether entry to the ruins is included.

Mud baths and thermal stops are additional possibilities, but their locations and transfer requirements vary. Choose one only when the complete itinerary fits your call. Ordinary full-day tours from Dalyan can take around eight hours, making them unsuitable for many cruise visits once ship transfers are added.

Planning Your Return

  • Use the ship’s stated all-aboard or last-tender time as your deadline.
  • For independent outings, plan to reach the designated return meeting point at least an hour before that deadline, with a larger margin for multiple boat connections.
  • Do not depend on the final shared boat or minibus of the day. Seasonal services, waiting times and weather can affect the journey.
  • Carry sun protection, drinking water and suitable footwear; add swimwear and a towel for a beach stop.
  • For a typical 7–8-hour call, prioritize the river plus either Kaunos or İztuzu, adjusting the plan to the actual time available after transfers.
