Desroches Island (Ile Desroches) is the main of Seychelles' Amirantes Islands. It is located approx 227 km (140 mi) southwest of the capital city Victoria (on Mahe island).
The island has length of 5,5 km (3,4 mi) and covers a land area of approx 4 km2 (1,6 mi2). Its population is around 100. Its entire coastline (13 km / 8 mi) is a fine sand beach.
The island was named after Chevalier des Roches, Governor (between 1767 and 1772) of Ile de France (today Mauritius Island) and Ile Bourbon (today Reunion Island). The island used to be a major producer of copra.
Ile Desroches belongs to Seychelles' Outer Islands District. Its inhabitants are engaged mainly in tourism, as well as in small-scale farming and fishing, mainly for local consumption.
