Elcho Island (aka Galiwinku) is located in Arafura Sea (Northern Territory, Australia). To the east it is separated from Wessel Islands by the Brown Strait. Mainland Australia and Howard Island are a short distance to the south-southwest.
- The isle has length of 30 ml (48 km), width of 7 ml (11 km) and total population around 2,300.
- The town of Galiwinku (population around 2,000) was established in 1942. This is the largest Aboriginal settlement in Arnhem Land, and the NT Australia's 2nd largest (as concentrated population), with a total of 18 tribes (clan groups) speaking 14 different languages up to 22 dialects.
- Besides Galiwinku, the other major settlement is Gäwa (on the islae's northern tip).
- Elcho Island is a restricted access territory, so valid permissions to visit are required by law. Total alcohol restrictions also apply, and the use of gasoline is forbidden (the "Opal" petrol is used as fuel substitute).
