Emmersdorf an der Donau (port locode ATEMM) is a Danube River cruise port in Austria, and a market town located opposite to Melk. It lies in the district of Melk, in the Lower Austria state.
Emmersdorf an der Donau has a population of around 2,000. Its total area is 29.81 km2 (11.51 mi2).
The town is the gateway to the Wachau Valley (river landscape between Melk and Krems).
Exploring Emmersdorf During a River Cruise Call
Emmersdorf offers two main choices: stay on the north bank for a quiet village and riverside walk, or cross the Danube by road to visit Melk Abbey. The village is easy independently; Melk requires transport and some planning. On a short call, the ship’s abbey excursion is usually the most practical way to combine the transfer and visit.
Getting from the Ship
River cruise ships dock alongside a pontoon rather than tendering. Emmersdorf’s cruise landing, Donaustation 12, is on the north bank opposite Melk, with coach access nearby. Do not confuse it with Donaustation 38, the landing for scheduled excursion boats closer to the village center. Confirm your actual berth and pedestrian exit before setting off.
Melk Abbey is visible across the water, but reaching it involves the road bridge. From central Emmersdorf, the road journey is approximately 4–5 km (2.5–3.1 mi); allow roughly 10–15 minutes by taxi or coach, depending on the pickup and drop-off points. Arrange a taxi in advance rather than expecting a rank beside the ship.
Regional buses connect Emmersdorf and Melk, but waiting time and the walk from the stop can consume a substantial part of a short call. Check both outward and return services before relying on them. A complimentary cruise shuttle should not be assumed.
Best Ways to Spend Your Time
Melk Abbey: the Main Sightseeing Choice
Organized excursion recommended for a short call; independent with prearranged transport on a longer stop. The main visitor route includes the museum, Marble Hall, terrace and library, followed by the abbey church. A guided tour takes about 50 minutes, but allow 1.5–2 hours for arrival, tickets and the principal sights. Around 2.5 hours is more comfortable if you also want the seasonal park and additional exhibitions.
Budget approximately 3–4 hours overall for an independent visit from Emmersdorf, including transfers and a return margin. A two-hour port call is too tight for this independently. Check seasonal admission arrangements: during parts of winter, entry is restricted to guided visits at set times.
The abbey is above Melk’s old town. A vehicle transfer reduces the approach climb, although the visit still involves walking and standing. Passengers with limited mobility should confirm the accessible visitor route before booking.
Emmersdorf Village and River Views
Easy independently. Stay on the ship’s side of the river for Marktstraße, the old townhouses, Magdalenenkapelle and views towards Melk Abbey. Allow approximately 1.5–2 hours for a gentle outing with photographs and a café stop, adjusting for your berth’s distance from the center.
The lower village and riverside make the easier option. St. Nicholas Parish Church stands above the village in Hofamt and adds an uphill walk; include it only if you are comfortable with gradients and steps.
Luberegg Riverside Break
Independent with some planning. Luberegg, west of the village center, has a natural sandy riverside beach and recreation area with views towards Melk Abbey. It suits a relaxed outdoor break rather than another major sightseeing visit. Allow around 1.5–3 hours, depending on your starting berth and whether you walk or arrange transport.
Confirm the route from your pontoon before leaving. Treat this primarily as a riverside outing: swimming depends on local conditions, water levels and any posted restrictions.
Self-Guided Walking Options
Short Village Walk: Marktstraße and the Waterfront
Easy. Start at the village-side waterfront access near the center. This compact out-and-back circuit is approximately 1–1.5 km (0.6–0.9 mi), with 20–30 minutes of walking and about 60–90 minutes recommended including stops. Add the walk between your actual cruise berth and the starting point.
- Pause on the waterfront for views across the Danube towards Melk Abbey.
- Use the designated pedestrian access into the village, taking care around the B3 main road.
- Follow Marktstraße past the historic townhouses.
- Stop at Magdalenenkapelle; visit inside if open.
- Retrace your way through the center, with an optional café stop, then return to the waterfront and your berth.
The route uses mostly paved surfaces with some uneven paving and short gradients. It excludes the steeper climb to the parish church.
Longer Countryside Walk: Magdalenenweg
Moderate for cruise visitors because of its length. This established circuit starts and finishes at Magdalenenkapelle and covers approximately 9 km (5.6 mi). Allow about 2 hours 20 minutes of continuous walking, or 3–4 hours with stops, plus the connection to and from your ship.
- Begin at Magdalenenkapelle in the village center.
- Follow the published route along the Danube towards Schallemmersdorf.
- Continue through the railway underpass and along the streams towards Burgkircherl Gossam.
- Return through Gossam, with the optional stone-labyrinth detour if time permits.
- Follow the route back past the schools and parish church to Magdalenenkapelle.
Expect mixed surfaces, gentle climbs and steps, with approximately 113 meters of cumulative ascent. Carry the official route map or an offline track. This is an alternative to Melk Abbey for a longer call, rather than an activity to squeeze in afterwards.
Planning Your Return
- Confirm whether the ship remains in Emmersdorf or sails onward while an excursion is ashore. The return meeting point may be elsewhere.
- For independent Melk visits, arrange the return transfer before leaving Emmersdorf and aim to reach the berth at least 30 minutes before all-aboard, with additional contingency for buses.
- On a two- to three-hour call, choose either a short local walk or the ship’s scheduled excursion.
- For an evening arrival, check abbey admission carefully; a village walk may be the more realistic option.
