Kekova Island (aka Caravola) is located close to Demre (Lycian town of Myra) in Antalya Province (southwestern Turkey). It faces the villages of Ucagız (ancient Teimioussa) and Kalekoy (ancient Simena) on mainland Turkey.

  • The island is uninhabited, with land area 4,5 km2 (2 ml2).
  • Following the Italian occupation of Kastellorizo Island (Greece), Kekova (was disputed between Turkey and Italy. The 1932 Convention assigned it to Turkey.
  • On the island's northern side there are partly sunken ruins of Dolikisthe (Dolchiste) - an ancient town that was destroyed by earthquake in the 2nd century. Rebuilt and flourishing during the Byzantine Empire (330-1453), the town was finally abandoned due to Arab incursions.
  • In January 1990, Kekova was declared a protected area.
