Marin is a port town in Spain's Galicia region (Pontevedra province) with population around 25,000. Port Marin is a major military harbor (Spanish Navy's homeport) as well as the principal seaport of Pontevedra City - the capital of Pontevedra Province and Comarca County, and also of Rias Baixas (a resort region grouping the four estuaries/coastal inlets/rias - Pontevedra, Vigo, Arousa, Muros e Noia).
Port Pontevedra (locode ESPEV) can handle only smaller-sized vessels - with max LOA length 19 m (62 ft). Pontevedra Marina (close to the city's Old Town and Currents Bridge) is a premium boating facility located at Lerez River's mouth and privately managed (under a concession from Ports of Galicia). Pontevedra Marina has 142 slots/berths for pleasure boats and yachts.
Puerto de Marin (locode ESMPG) is a large commercial seaport serving cargo carriers, container ships, passenger vessels (ferries, cruise ships, superyachts) as well as fishing vessels. Port Marin covers land area 0,75 km2 (75 hectares/185 acres), water area 98 km2 (38 mi2) and has commercial berth line length 1806 m (5925 ft) and fishing berth line length 2686 m (8810 ft). The Port houses 2x shipyards, 3x docks for ship repairs, 3x container terminals/docks, 8x general cargo terminals/docks, 8x fishing docks (plus floating piers), warehouses, a Fish Auction Hall, a passenger terminal, an internal network of roads and railways (linking directly to AP-9 highway and Pontevedra Railway Station).
Among domestic tourists, Marin-Pontevedra is popular for Escuela Naval Militar (Spain's Naval Military Academy for officers) and Pazo de Cadro (Galicia's oldest palace owned by the Spanish aristocratic Romay family with origins dating back to the 13th-century). However, tourists are mainly attracted by the Marin municipality's beautiful beaches, the largest of which are named Aguete, Loire, Mogor, Lapaman, O Santo, Portocelo.
Located in the heart of Rias Baixas, Pontevedra City is just 8 km (5 mi) to the northeast from Puerto de Marin (at ~20-minutes drive distance). The city has population around 80,000 (metro over 200,000/residents of the Pontevedra-included 9 municipalities).
Pontevedra City is approx 60 km (40 mi) to the south from Santiago de Compostela (Galicia's capital city, or at ~50-min drive distance) and approx 30 km (18 mi) to the north from Vigo (Galicia's principal seaport) via Autoestrada do Atlantico/AP-9 highway linking La Coruna-Santiago de Compostela-Pontevedra-Vigo-Tui).
The city is served by two international airports (Santiago-Rosalia de Castro/Santiago de Compostela, and Vigo-Peinador/Vigo) as well as by high-speed trains (by Renfe Operadora's AVE/state-owned railway company) running with max speed 310 kph (193 mph). The railroad is part of the Atlantic Axis/Corridor (2015-opened high-speed railway linking La Coruna-Santiago de Compostela-Pontevedra-Vigo with Lisbon Portugal).
