Portland is a small port city in Victoria (Australia) located on Portland Bay, with population around 10,000.

  • Portland is also Victoria's oldest European settlement and the main urban centre in Shire of Glenelg. In 1996 the port of Portland was sold by the government to a group including the listed NZ company Infratil & the Scott Corporation, the first Australian privatisation of port facilities. Since then, the port has been traded a number of times and is currently owned by a couple of institutional investors - the private infrastructure fund Utilities Trust of Australia and publicly listed Australian Infrastructure Fund - both managed by Hastings Funds Management.
  • Port of Portland received assistance through public funding of A$18M overpass giving better access to the port for heavy traffic. Glenelg Shire Council recently adopted a plan for the development of foreshore precinct including a multi purpose marina in harbour's north-west corner.
  • The Great South West Walk is a walking track that is long 250 km (160 ml) and begins at Visitor Information Centre, Portland. It was designed as long distance walking track, and is also good for day walks and short walks. The walk travels though river gorges, sublime bays, forests and cliff tops. Established in 1981, it is administered, promoted and maintained by 'The Friends of the Great South West Walk Inc', volunteer organisation via Parks Victoria partnership.
  • Portland Maritime Museum houses Portland Lifeboat constructed in 1858, which is one of the world's oldest remaining lifeboats. Famous for rescuing nineteen survivors of Admella shipwreck (1859), and Julia shipwreck (1863). The Admella, a steamship which weighs 392 tons, was cruising to Melbourne from Adelaide when she was smashed onto a reef in South Australia off Carpenter Rocks with a loss of 89 lives. Portland Lifeboat and crew were pivotal in the rescue operation. On display at the museum is a real whale skeleton, as well as the famed 'Portland Lifeboat' that was used in Admella rescue.
