Pulau Biak Island is located in Cenderawasih Bay, close to Papua Indonesia province's northern coast and northwest of New Guinea Island. Biak Island has population around 120,000. Its largest city is Kota Biak (on the southern coast). The rest of the island is thinly populated with small villages.
Pulau Biak is surrounded by many coral reefs and atolls. Biak-Numfoor rain forest has the largest number of endemic bird species in the New Guinea region. Many amphibian and reptile species are also found here. Rain forest flora includes a variety of trees (including commercially important) and mangrove swamps' lush vegetation.
Papua's Biak Island is served by Frans Kaisiepo Airport (domestic flights from all over Indonesia). There are plans for satellite launch services at the new Biak Spaceport as the island's equatorial location provides efficient launches to near-equatorial and equatorial orbits.
