Sable Island is a small isle in Canada's Nova Scotia Province (Northern Atlantic Ocean), located approx 175 km (109 mi) southeast of mainland Nova Scotia and approx 300 km (190 mi) southeast of Halifax NS.
The island is generally uninhabited, excluding only the year-round federal government staff (4 people from Parks Canada / managing country's marine conservation areas and historic sites) and the visiting during summer research scientists and tourists.
The isle is best-known for the Sable Island horse breed. As a protected National Park Reserve, tourists are allowed to visit Sable Island only after acquiring permission from Parks Canada.
The island was first discovered by the Portuguese (in the early-16th-century / 1520 AD) and named Fagunda. Sporadically, the treeless and stoneless Fagunda was inhabited by sealers, salvagers and shipwreck survivors. The island is best known for its ~350 shipwrecks (vessels that have run aground on its sand bars between 1583 and 1947) mainly due to thick fogs and heavy sea currents.
