Surtsey Island is a volcanic isle in Vestmannaeyjar archipelago (Westman Islands/off Iceland's southern coast). Surtsey is Iceland's southernmost point. It was formed in 1963-1967 by an eruption that started 130 m (426 ft) below sea level. The lava reached the surface on November 14, 1963, and lasted until June 5, 1967. Island's current size is 2,7 km2 (1 mi2). Wave erosion has caused it to steadily diminish in size. Island's highest elevation point is 155 m (509 ft) above sea level.

Surtsey was named after Surtr, a fire giant from Norse mythology. The island was intensively studied during its eruption (and afterward) by international biologists as life forms colonized the originally barren land. The eruption created Surtsey plus a few other isles along this chain, but most of them eroded fairly quickly.

Cruise ships to Surtsey Island dock (anchor) at Vestmannaeyjar - port town on the northern coast of Heimaey Island, Iceland.
