Port Howard (aka Puerto Mitre) is the largest settlement on West Falkland Island (Falkland Islands / Islas Malvinas). The town is located on the isle's east coast and on the slopes of Mount Maria (Hornby Mountains).
Around 20 permanent residents live in Port Howard manning West Falkland's huge (800 km2 / 200,000 acres) sheep farm. Port Howard is served by 2 airstrips and receives regular flights from Stanley. The port is also the West Terminal of Falklands' East-West Ferry. The island has a network of all-weather roads. Fishing rivers on the island are Warrah and Chartres.
Every 3 years, here are hosted the week-long West Falklands Sports - horse-racing event celebrating the end of the shearing season.
