Port Douglas is a town situated in Far North Queensland, Australia, 70 km (40 miles) north of Cairns. In 2011 its permanent population was 3,200 people. The population of Port Douglas can often double, with the influx of tourists during peak tourism season from May through September. The town is named to honour John Douglas, former Premier of Queensland. Port Douglas developed very fast based on mining industry. Other parts of the region were established with timber cutting in the area surrounding Daintree River and with settlement on lots around Mossman River by 1880.
Port Douglas' previous names included Terrigal, Port Owen, Salisbury and Island Point. The town is adjacent to a couple of World Heritage areas, the Daintree Rainforest and the Great Barrier Reef.
Every year the town attracts tourist and locals to two festival periods. Port Douglas Carnivale is organized during the end of May. It runs for 10 days over 2 weekends beginning with Macrossan Street Parade that attracts more than 10,000 people. The 2nd festival period is through October and November and includes The Sunset in the Park Music Festival & Porttoberfest North Queensland's Beer Festival.
Port Douglas turns into athletes' village during the first weekend in November when it hosts the Canegrowers Great Barrier Reef Marathon Festival. Competitors get the chance to race against Marathon Olympian in Steve Moneghetti Marathon.
Port Douglas is situated close to the Great Barrier Reef. Many companies run daily trips to the outer reef and Low Isles for snorkelling and scuba diving. Port Douglas is also famous for its many restaurants, five star resorts and golf courses.
