Sarande (or Saranda/Sarandë) is a town and municipality located in Vlorë County, southern Albania. Sarande is one of the major tourist attractions of Albanian Riviera. It lies on an open sea gulf of Ionian Sea in central Mediterranean, around 14 km (8.7 miles) east of the north end of the Greek island Corfu. The present municipality was made at the local government reform in 2015 by the merger of former municipalities Sarande and Ksamil, which became municipal units. The municipality's seat is the town Sarande. Its total population is 20,230, in a total area of 59 km2. The population of the former municipality was 17,230 in 2011, but the population according to civil offices is 41,170 (as of 2013). Close to Sarande are the remains of the ancient Butrint city, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Sarande has a Greek minority. It is considered one of the two centers of Greek community in Albania.
