American Duchess (built in 2017, major refurbishment in 2023, scrapped in 2024) was an authentically designed stern paddle-wheel riverboat operating itineraries on the USA's Mississippi River. The cruise ship was last operated by American Queen Voyages (AQV), formerly known as AQSC (American Queen Steamboat Company), and sailed alongside fleetmates American Queen, American Empress, and American Countess.
A unique aspect of this vessel is that it was constructed atop an existing casino riverboat ("Isle of Capri"), which was permanently docked in Bettendorf, Iowa. The ship retained its original hull, engines (power plant), and propulsion system, while three new decks were added to create the traditional “wedding cake” riverboat design.
The American Duchess deck plan featured 83 all-suite staterooms accommodating 166 passengers, attended by 53 all-American crew members. The vessel had four passenger decks, all accessible via two elevators, along with two lounges, two restaurants, ample open (sundeck) spaces, and no onboard medical facility or doctor.
The onboard experience was boutique and upscale, with all-suite accommodations and premium amenities designed to offer a high-end river cruising vacation.
American Duchess operated Mississippi River itineraries between New Orleans and St. Paul, also exploring the river's tributaries. Roundtrip voyages from Nashville and New Orleans included overnight port stays. Departures from Chicago featured embarkation in Ottawa, Illinois.
