Viking has taken delivery of Viking Dagur, the newest addition to its fleet of Viking Longships, further expanding the company's European river cruise operations.
The 190-passenger vessel was constructed at Meyer Neptun Werft's shipyard in Rostock-Warnemünde, Germany, and joins Viking's growing fleet of sister ships operating on Europe's inland waterways. Following delivery, Viking Dagur will enter service on the Rhine, Main and Danube rivers.
Viking stated that the addition of the new vessel represents another step in the company's ongoing fleet expansion strategy, increasing opportunities for guests to explore Europe's river destinations aboard purpose-built ships designed in the company's Scandinavian style.
Accommodating up to 190 guests in 95 staterooms, Viking Dagur incorporates several design features that have become standard across the Viking Longship fleet. These include the patented square bow, which allows for three full passenger decks, the indoor-outdoor Aquavit Terrace and an asymmetric corridor arrangement that enables the inclusion of true two-room suites.
The vessel will operate several of Viking's established European itineraries, including Rhine Getaway, Paris to the Swiss Alps, Christmas on the Rhine, and Christmas on the Rhine & Moselle.
Viking also reaffirmed its long-term fleet expansion programme. Based on its current orderbook, the company expects to take delivery of an additional 21 river vessels by 2028, together with nine ocean cruise ships and two expedition ships by 2031.
Upon completion of the current newbuilding programme, Viking's fleet is expected to comprise 114 river ships by 2028 and a combined fleet of 26 ocean and expedition vessels by 2031, reinforcing the company's continued focus on experiential travel across river, ocean and expedition cruising.
