Aalborg sits on Jutland Peninsula's north-eastern shore near Arhus. The city was established early in the 11th century. Aalborg is among the oldest towns in Denmark. During the 17th century it became a major commercial centre and was Denmark's 2nd-largest city until 1850.
Aalborg features some Medieval landmarks including Holy Ghost Monastery (1431), Budolfi Church (circa 1500), Alborghus castle (1539). Alborg art and historical museum shelters relics from the Viking ship cemetery. Close by is Rebild National Park and Tivoliland theme park. A memorial to Danish-American friendship was introduced in 1912.
