Andros is a large, sparsely developed island best known for blue holes, mangrove wetlands, fishing and the Andros Barrier Reef. A cruise call here is quite different from a conventional resort-port visit: facilities are limited, attractions are widely separated and most nature experiences require advance transport or a guide.

Getting from the Ship

Small cruise and expedition ships may anchor offshore and tender passengers to Andros, with Fresh Creek near Andros Town commonly used for Central Andros visits. There is no large cruise terminal or dependable island-wide public transport network. Taxis and tour vehicles can be limited, so transport should be arranged through the ship or confirmed in advance. Do not plan to explore distant parts of Andros on foot.

Best Ways to Spend the Call

Blue Holes National Park

The park protects pine forest, wildlife habitat and numerous inland blue holes. Captain Bill’s Blue Hole is its best-known visitor site, reached by a short forest trail with interpretive signs, a boardwalk and a viewing gazebo. Road access can be rough, making a guided excursion or pre-arranged driver the practical choice.

Allow roughly half a day including transport and time at the park. Wear closed shoes, carry water and insect repellent, and enter the water only where local conditions and your guide permit it.

Andros Barrier Reef and Marine Trips

Snorkeling, scuba diving and boat trips provide the most distinctive experience of Andros. The barrier reef follows the island’s east coast, while deep water lies only a short distance offshore. These activities require a local boat operator or cruise excursion and should be reserved in advance.

A reef trip normally uses most of a half-day call. Weather, currents and sea conditions may alter or cancel departures, so avoid arranging an independent boat trip with a tight return schedule.

Mangrove Kayaking or Bonefishing

Andros has extensive tidal creeks, flats and mangrove wetlands. Guided kayaking offers a quieter nature experience, while the island is internationally known for bonefishing. Both activities depend on tides, suitable weather and local knowledge; an organized guide is strongly recommended.

Allow at least three to four hours, including transfers and equipment preparation. These are better choices for passengers comfortable with outdoor activity than for those seeking conventional sightseeing.

Fresh Creek and Androsia Batik

If the tender lands at Fresh Creek, the most practical independent outing is a short exploration near the creek and the Androsia Batik Factory. The factory produces hand-waxed and hand-dyed fabrics, with a shop where locally made clothing and textiles may be available.

The factory is approximately 0.8 km (0.5 mi) from the Fresh Creek landing area, although the exact walking distance depends on the tender pier. Confirm that the factory is open before setting out; demonstrations and visitor access should not be assumed on every cruise-call day.

Easy Creek and Batik Route

1. Begin at the Fresh Creek tender landing.
2. Pause for views along the creek and small harbor.
3. Follow the local road toward the Lighthouse Yacht Club area.
4. Visit the Androsia Batik Factory and shop if open.
5. Return to the tender pier by the same route.

Distance: Approximately 1.6–2 km (1–1.2 mi) round trip.

Walking time: About 25–35 minutes without stops.

Recommended time: 1–1.5 hours if the factory is open.

Difficulty: Easy and mostly flat, but expect heat, limited shade and roads without continuous sidewalks. This route is relevant only when passengers land at Fresh Creek.

Beaches and Swimming

Andros has quiet beaches, but many are isolated or associated with small lodges rather than developed public beach facilities. A beach visit is most practical with a confirmed taxi, resort arrangement or ship excursion. Before leaving the landing area, agree on both the destination and return pickup; taxis may not wait near remote beaches.

Practical Tips

• Confirm the tender landing before making independent plans; Fresh Creek and Morgan’s Bluff are far apart.
• Pre-arrange nature tours, taxis and boat activities because walk-up availability can be limited.
• Carry drinking water, sun protection and insect repellent.
• Bring suitable footwear for rough tracks, forest paths and wet boat landings.
• Cellular coverage and card acceptance may be less consistent outside settlements; carry some Bahamian or US dollars.
