Annapolis MD is a port city and the capital of Maryland (East Coast USA). It is located on the Chesapeake Bay, at the mouth of Severn River. The city covers a total area of 21 km2 (8 mi2) and has a population of around 40,000. Annapolis is approx 40 km (25 ml) south of Baltimore and about 50 km (30 mi) east of Washington. The city is part of the Baltimore–Washington metropolitan area.

The city of Annapolis served as the seat of Continental Congress in 1783–1784 and was the site of 1786 Annapolis Convention and Annapolis Peace Conference, 2007. Annapolis is also the home of St.John's College and the U.S. Naval Academy.

Banneker-Douglass Museum, situated at 87 Franklin Street in the historic Mount Moriah Church, documents the history of Maryland's African Americans. Since its opening on Feb 24, 1984, the museum has provided rotating exhibits, educational programs, and research facilities. Admission is free.

Hammond-Harwood House, at 19 Maryland Avenue, was constructed in 1774 for the wealthy Maryland farmer Matthias Hammond. Its design was adapted by architect William Buckland (1734–1774) from Andrea Palladio's Villa Pisani in order to accommodate American Colonial regional preferences. Since 1940, when the house was bought from St.John's College by Hammond-Harwood House Association, it has served as a museum.

Preble Hall, named in honour to Edward Preble, houses U.S. Naval Academy Museum, established in 1845. Its Beverley R.Robinson Collection contains around 6,000 prints depicting American and European naval history from 1514 until World War II. It also homes one of the best ship model collections in the world, donated by Henry Huttleston Rogers.

Kunta Kinte-Alex Haley memorial, at the head of the harbor, commemorates the arrival of Alex Haley's African ancestor, Kunta Kinte. His story is related to Haley's book "Roots". 

Paca House and Garden encompass a Georgian mansion constructed during the 18th century by William Paca (1740-1799), signer of the Declaration of Independence. This unique property includes a terraced garden which has been restored to its previous colonial-era design.

Annapolis boasts more than 81 ha (200 acres) of parkland, with the biggest park being 70-acre Truxtun Heights Park. Annapolis also homes the 340-acre Quiet Waters Park run by the county.

Easy independently. Annapolis has a compact, walkable historic center beside the harbor. City Dock, Main Street, the Maryland State House and the pedestrian entrance to the U.S. Naval Academy are all close together. Brick sidewalks, slopes and occasional steps may be difficult for visitors with limited mobility.

Getting from the Cruise Port

Small cruise ships normally use the downtown waterfront, placing passengers within walking distance of the main sights. There is no large conventional cruise terminal. The exact landing point can vary, so follow the ship's instructions if a shuttle, tender or alternative dock is used.

Major reconstruction is underway around parts of City Dock until approximately summer 2027. Some waterfront sections, pedestrian routes and boarding points may be temporarily relocated or restricted, although downtown businesses and the historic district remain accessible.

Best Ways to Spend Your Time

Historic Annapolis and the Maryland State House

Allow 2–3 hours for City Dock, Main Street, State Circle and the surrounding colonial streets. The route is easy to follow independently, but it climbs gradually from the waterfront and includes uneven brick paving.

The Maryland State House can be visited when public access is available. Visitors pass through security, and adults should carry government-issued photo identification. Allow extra time for screening.

United States Naval Academy

The Naval Academy's Gate 1 pedestrian entrance is only a short walk from the historic center. Inside, visitors can explore designated areas of the Yard, the chapel surroundings and the Naval Academy Museum when open. Allow about 1.5–2.5 hours, including entry screening.

Access is controlled and identification requirements vary by nationality and current security conditions. Carry an original passport or acceptable government-issued photo ID, check the current visitor rules before leaving the ship and be prepared for bags to be inspected. Entry can be restricted without notice.

Harbor Cruise or Sailing Trip

Short sightseeing cruises and seasonal sailing trips offer views of Annapolis Harbor, the Naval Academy shoreline and the Severn River. Departures normally use the downtown waterfront, although construction may temporarily change the boarding location. Choose a trip that leaves ample time after returning to reach the ship.

Eastport and the Maritime Side of Annapolis

Cross Spa Creek to Eastport for marinas, waterfront views and the Annapolis Maritime Museum area. It is practical on foot or by the seasonal water taxi. A relaxed visit takes 2–3 hours. Confirm the museum's opening hours and the water taxi's operating status before setting out.

Self-Guided Walking Tours

Easy Historic Center Walk

Route: cruise landing or waterfront access point → City Dock and Ego Alley → Alex Haley Memorial → Main Street → State Circle and Maryland State House → Maryland Avenue → Gate 1 of the Naval Academy → return to the waterfront.

  • Distance: approximately 2 km (1.2 mi)
  • Pure walking time: about 30–40 minutes
  • Recommended total time: 2–3 hours with sightseeing
  • Difficulty: easy to moderate, with a gradual uphill section and uneven brick sidewalks

The route remains close to the harbor, making it easy to shorten if necessary. Entering the State House or Naval Academy adds security-screening time.

Historic Center and Eastport Walk

Route: waterfront → Main Street → State Circle → Maryland Avenue → Naval Academy Gate 1 area → City Dock → Spa Creek bridge → Eastport waterfront → return across the bridge or by seasonal water taxi.

  • Distance: approximately 4.5 km (2.8 mi)
  • Pure walking time: about 60–75 minutes
  • Recommended total time: 3–4 hours
  • Difficulty: moderate, mainly because of distance, bridge approaches and brick paving

If returning by water taxi, confirm service before crossing to Eastport and retain enough time to walk back if boats are delayed or unavailable.

Practical Tips

  • Wear shoes suitable for brick sidewalks, slopes and potentially wet waterfront surfaces.
  • Carry original photo identification if you intend to enter the State House or Naval Academy.
  • Construction, boat shows and Naval Academy events can alter pedestrian access and create congestion around the harbor.
  • The seasonal water taxi is useful for Eastport but should not be your only return plan.
  • Allow at least 30–45 minutes to return to the ship, or more if your vessel uses tenders, a shuttle or an alternative landing point.
