Bleiksoya Island (Norway)

Bleiksøya is a protected bird island off the fishing village of Bleik on Andøya. Cruise calls are generally expedition-style visits: ships anchor offshore and passengers go ashore by tender or Zodiac, normally at Bleik rather than on Bleiksøya itself. Landing arrangements are weather-dependent and should be confirmed on board.

Independent sightseeing with some planning: Bleik village and its beach are easy to explore on foot after landing. Reaching Andenes, taking a wildlife boat trip or exploring more of Andøya requires pre-arranged transport or an organized excursion.

Getting Ashore

• Landing: There is no cruise terminal. Passengers should expect a tender or Zodiac landing at a suitable point in or near Bleik.
• Walking: The village is compact, but facilities are limited and there may be no taxis waiting for an expedition landing.
• Bleiksøya: Do not assume passengers can land on the bird island. It is a nature reserve, and wildlife visits normally observe it from a boat under local guidance.
• Andenes: The main town at the northern end of Andøya is approximately 10 km (6.2 mi) away. A pre-booked vehicle, cruise transfer or excursion is the practical option.

Explore Bleik and Bleik Beach

Bleik is a small fishing settlement backed by steep mountains and facing a long pale-sand beach. Walk through the village, follow the waterfront and spend time on the beach with views toward Bleiksøya. Allow 1.5–2.5 hours. This is the simplest independent option and involves mostly easy walking, although the beach surface can be tiring and conditions are often windy.

Take a Bird Safari Around Bleiksøya

A local boat trip offers the closest practical view of the protected bird cliffs. Puffins are seasonal, generally associated with the breeding period from spring into summer, while sea eagles and other seabirds may also be seen. Trips depend on sea conditions and should be booked through the cruise line or a confirmed local operator. Warm, waterproof clothing is important even in summer.

Visit Andenes

With arranged transport, Andenes offers a larger harbor, the red Andenes Lighthouse and museum attractions connected with local coastal life. Allow roughly 3–4 hours including transfers and sightseeing. Confirm opening times before choosing this option, as lighthouse and museum access can be seasonal or tour-based.

Drive Part of the Andøya Scenic Route

A guided or pre-arranged scenic drive can combine Bleik’s coastline with viewpoints, beaches and the exposed landscapes of northern Andøya. This is a better choice than relying on public transport during a short call. The route is particularly suitable when the weather is too unsettled for a wildlife boat trip.

Hike Toward Måtinden

Måtinden provides elevated views over Bleik Beach and the surrounding coast, but it is not a casual walk from the landing point. The hike requires transport to an appropriate trailhead, several hours, suitable footwear and stable weather. Choose it only on a long call with a guided excursion or carefully arranged transport; it is unsuitable when tender operations reduce the available time ashore.

Self-Guided Bleik Walk

Suggested route: landing point or harbor, village waterfront, fishing harbor, northern end of Bleik Beach, a short beach walk, village streets and return to the landing point.

• Distance: Approximately 3 km (1.9 mi), depending on the landing location and how far you walk along the beach.
• Pure walking time: About 45 minutes.
• Recommended total time: 1.5–2 hours with photography and beach stops.
• Difficulty: Easy; mostly level village roads with optional walking on sand.
• Conditions: Expect exposed coastal weather, strong wind and little shelter.

Turn back early enough to be at the designated landing point before the final tender. Tender operations can be slowed or changed by wind and swell.

Practical Tips

• Wear layers and carry a waterproof outer jacket; conditions can change quickly.
• Bring binoculars for bird and marine-wildlife viewing.
• Do not approach nesting birds or enter protected areas unless accompanied by an authorized guide.
• Do not depend on finding an available taxi, rental vehicle or same-day boat departure after landing.
• For independent travel beyond Bleik, arrange transport in advance and leave a generous margin for the return.
• If the ship uses Zodiacs, passengers may need to manage steps, uneven surfaces and a moving craft during embarkation.
