Isla Carenero: A Nearby Island Escape

Independent with some planning. Carenero is a short water-taxi crossing from Bocas Town. Ask to be taken to a specific beach or beachfront restaurant, since landing points differ. Allow approximately 2–3 hours for the outing, including transfers, a short shoreline walk and refreshments.

There are sandy paths rather than paved streets, and sections can be muddy after rain. Choose a short out-and-back walk instead of committing to a full island circuit. Check swimming conditions locally and arrange your return boat before settling in.

Starfish Beach via Boca del Drago

Independent with transport and return planning. Playa Estrella, or Starfish Beach, offers sheltered water and the possibility of seeing starfish in the shallows. Reaching Boca del Drago from Bocas Town generally takes around 40–45 minutes by road, followed by a coastal walk of roughly 20 minutes or a short local boat transfer.

Allow approximately 4–5 hours for a relaxed visit with transport and beach time. A taxi with an agreed return pickup is easier to manage during a cruise call than relying on an unverified bus departure. The coastal path includes sand and uneven ground.

Allow around 3–4 hours for the complete outing. This suits visitors wanting a beach backed by tropical forest, but surf and currents can make swimming unsuitable. Paths may be slippery after rain, and sightings of the small red frogs are not assured.

Organized excursion recommended. A guided boat outing can combine snorkeling with coastal scenery and a beach stop. Choose a trip whose actual departure and return times fit your tender schedule; regular tourist departures may not accommodate a cruise call.

Trips combining Cayo Coral, wildlife viewing and the Zapatilla islands can occupy much of the day. For limited time ashore, select a shorter itinerary with fewer stops. Waterfront access is interrupted by buildings and private docks, so follow public streets rather than expecting a continuous promenade.
