Cabo Frio (Cold Cape in English) is a port city in Brazil's Rio de Janeiro state, with population around 215,000. The city (locally known as "Cidade do Agito", 1615-founded) is approx 150 km (93 mi) northeast of Rio de Janeiro (the country's capital).
The city is served by Cabo Frio International Airport (1998-opened) built by the Rio de Janeiro State in partnership with the Air Force. Since 2011, Cabo Frio Airport is privately managed (under concession) by Libra Aeroportos. Domestic flights (by Azul Brazilian Airlines and VRG Linhas Aereas) link Cabo Frio with Belo Horizonte (regularly) and with Sao Paulo (seasonally). The cargo airline LATAM Cargo Brasil operates flights linking to Europe (Amsterdam Netherlands), the USA (Miami Florida) and Brazil (Campinas/Sao Paulo State).
Cabo Frio is popular for its beautiful white sand beaches and extravagant entertainment. Cabo Frio beaches are great for surfing, diving and swimming, but watch out for mosquitos.
The ruins of Forte Sao Mateus (dating back from 1616) are at the mouth of Canal de Itajuru (connecting Lagoa Araruama with the Atlantic Ocean). Strong Beach ("Praia do Forte") is nearby and is the city's most popular beach.
Angry Beach ("Praia Brava") is the most popular surfing location (for skilled surfers) with its huge crashing waves.
