Independent sightseeing is easy. Cadillac-sur-Garonne is a compact riverside bastide, and its historic center, fortified gates and ducal château can be explored on foot from the river landing. Getting from the River Landing

River cruise vessels normally moor beside Cadillac-sur-Garonne, within walking distance of the old town. The route from the landing leads toward the surviving walls and Porte de la Mer; the central square and Château ducal are roughly a 10–15-minute walk away.

Cadillac does not have a large cruise terminal. Access is generally directly from the vessel’s gangway, but river levels can affect the exact landing point and the steepness of the gangway. The historic center is mostly level and compact, although some pavements are uneven and parts of the route have cobbles.

Best Ways to Spend Your Time

Explore the Bastide and Château ducal

This is the most practical independent option. Walk through the remains of the fortified town, see the arcaded central square, old houses, market hall, Porte de la Mer and Porte de l’Horloge, then continue to the château overlooking the bastide.

Allow about 60–90 minutes for the streets and ramparts, plus approximately 1–1.5 hours if visiting the château interior. The château preserves monumental fireplaces, tapestries and painted decoration, while later sections reflect its former use as a women’s prison. Check the day’s opening and admission arrangements before leaving the ship, as seasonal closures and guided-visit periods may apply.

Enjoy a Short Riverside and Town Walk

Passengers who prefer a lighter visit can combine the Garonne waterfront with the lower bastide, fortified gates and central square. Allow 60–90 minutes. This option requires no transport and makes it easy to return to the vessel at short notice.

Visit the Sauternes Wine Area

Cadillac is a convenient starting point for the vineyards associated with Cadillac, Loupiac, Barsac and Sauternes wines. Estates are scattered through the countryside rather than concentrated within the town, and tastings generally require advance arrangements.

A ship excursion, reserved winery tour or pre-arranged taxi is preferable. Allow at least 3–4 hours for a meaningful visit and tasting, depending on the chosen estate. Do not rely on finding a taxi immediately at the landing.

Château de Roquetaillade and a Winery

This medieval château is commonly combined with a regional wine tasting on guided excursions. It is outside Cadillac and not practical as a casual walk or an improvised public-transport trip during a short call. An organized excursion is the simplest option because it coordinates the rural transfer, château admission and return to the vessel.

1. River landing: Begin beside the Garonne and follow the route toward the old fortified town.
2. Porte de la Mer: Enter through one of the surviving medieval gateways and look for sections of the defensive walls.
3. Place de la République: Walk into the central bastide square, bordered by arcades and traditional buildings.
4. Porte de l’Horloge: Continue through the geometric street plan to the second principal surviving gate.
5. Saint-Martin Church: Visit if open; the church contains notable religious furnishings and a funerary chapel associated with the dukes of Épernon.
6. Château ducal: Walk to the château for exterior views or an interior visit if time and opening arrangements permit.
7. Ramparts and riverside return: Follow the edge of the old town back toward Porte de la Mer and the vessel.

The route can be shortened easily by returning from the central square. Passengers entering the château should keep track of tour duration and leave sufficient time to walk back to the landing.

• Wear shoes suitable for cobbles, uneven paving and a potentially sloping river gangway.
• Cadillac is small and generally quiet outside market periods; shops and cafés may close around midday or on certain weekdays.
• Confirm château opening arrangements before planning the visit around its interior.

• For independent outings beyond town, allow extra time for rural roads and limited transport availability.
