Catskill NY is a Hudson River cruise port and town in New York state's Greene County, with population around 12,000. Town's land area was purchased from the Indians in 1678, and as town was established in 1788. Greene County was formed in 1800. The riverport (boat dock) is called Dutchman's Landing. Through Catskill NY pass two major roads - I-87 (highway part of the New York State Thruway) and US-9W (north–south running highway in NJ-NY).

As cruise port, Catskill NY was first included in the "Hudson River Cruises" 2018 schedule of the USA's largest river cruise company - ACL-American Cruise Lines.

The next table shows the company's 7-day itinerary from homeport NYC, with prices from ~USD 4,000 per person (double occupancy).

Catskill is a small Hudson River port where independent sightseeing is practical. River ships normally use the waterfront around Dutchman’s Landing and Historic Catskill Point, close to the southern end of Main Street. The village center can be reached on foot, while Olana, Kaaterskill Falls and the wider Catskill Mountains require arranged transport.

At a Glance

  • Independent sightseeing: Easy for the waterfront and village; transport and advance planning are needed for attractions outside Catskill.
  • Arrival: Ships normally dock rather than tender, but passengers should confirm the exact gangway location onboard.
  • Best nearby sights: Historic Main Street, Catskill Creek, Thomas Cole National Historic Site and the Hudson River Skywalk.
  • Terrain: Main Street is straightforward, but routes toward the Thomas Cole Site and bridge include gradual slopes.

Getting from the Riverfront

Dutchman’s Landing and Historic Catskill Point are public waterfront areas rather than a large passenger terminal. Main Street begins near the landing and leads directly into the village.

The nearest shops, galleries and places to eat are approximately 0.8–1.5 km (0.5–0.9 mi) from the waterfront, depending on the berth and destination. Allow about 10–20 minutes each way. Local bus services are limited and are not especially convenient for a short call. Taxis and app-based rides may also be scarce, so arrange transportation in advance for attractions outside the village.

Best Ways to Spend the Call

Explore Catskill Village

Allow 1.5–3 hours for the riverfront, Main Street and a relaxed meal or coffee stop. The compact center has historic commercial buildings, independent shops, galleries and views along Catskill Creek. This is the easiest option to do independently and can be shortened if the ship has only a brief stay.

Visit the Thomas Cole National Historic Site

The former home and studios of Thomas Cole, founder of the Hudson River School of landscape painting, are approximately 2–2.5 km (1.2–1.6 mi) from the landing. Allow 35–45 minutes to walk each way, plus at least one hour for the site.

The walk is possible for active visitors but includes traffic crossings and gradual slopes. Tours and access to the historic interiors operate on a schedule, so check the current program and reserve in advance when required. A prearranged taxi is preferable for passengers who want to conserve time or walking energy.

Thomas Cole Site and Hudson River Skywalk

From the Thomas Cole Site, visitors can continue toward the pedestrian path across the Rip Van Winkle Bridge. The bridge section provides broad views over the Hudson River and toward the Catskill Mountains.

The complete Skywalk between the Thomas Cole Site and Olana is about 4.8 km (3 mi) each way. Walking all the way to Olana and back is therefore unsuitable for many short port calls. A more practical independent option is to walk onto the bridge for the views, turn back, and return to the ship through the village.

Olana State Historic Site

Olana, the hilltop home and designed landscape of painter Frederic Church, lies across the Hudson River. By road it is usually around 10–15 minutes from Catskill, but dependable return transport should be arranged before leaving the ship.

The extensive grounds and carriage roads can be explored independently, while house visits may require timed tickets. Combining Olana with the Thomas Cole Site works best as a ship excursion or prearranged private tour.

Kaaterskill Falls and the Catskill Mountains

Kaaterskill Falls is approximately 27 km (16.8 mi) from Catskill and about 25–35 minutes away by road in normal conditions. There is no practical walk-in or frequent transit option from the port.

An organized excursion or private driver is recommended. The short approach from the Laurel House trailhead to the upper viewing platform is about 0.5 km (0.3 mi) each way, but other routes are longer and more demanding. Remain on marked paths and behind barriers because the cliffs and wet rock around the falls are hazardous.

Self-Guided Walking Routes

Easy Waterfront and Main Street Walk

Distance: Approximately 2.5–3 km (1.6–1.9 mi) round trip
Walking time: 35–45 minutes without stops
Recommended time: 1.5–2.5 hours
Difficulty: Easy, with mostly paved streets and gentle gradients

  1. Begin at the ship’s landing near Dutchman’s Landing or Historic Catskill Point.
  2. Take in the Hudson River and Catskill Creek views from the waterfront.
  3. Follow Main Street north toward the historic commercial center.
  4. Browse the shops, galleries and cafés around the central Main Street blocks.
  5. Detour toward the creek where public access is available for views of the harbor and moored boats.
  6. Return along Main Street to the landing.

This route is easy to shorten. Begin the return at least 30 minutes before the required onboard time, or earlier if the landing area is busy.

Moderate Village and Thomas Cole Walk

Distance: Approximately 5 km (3.1 mi) round trip
Walking time: About 1 hour 15 minutes without stops
Recommended time: 3–4 hours with a site visit
Difficulty: Moderate, with slopes and several road crossings

  1. Walk from the landing through the Main Street commercial district.
  2. Continue toward Bridge Street and Spring Street.
  3. Enter the Thomas Cole National Historic Site from its signed Spring Street entrance.
  4. Visit the grounds, studios and house if admission is available.
  5. If time permits, continue briefly toward the western approach to the Hudson River Skywalk for a river viewpoint.
  6. Retrace the route through Main Street to the ship.

Do not attempt the full walk to Olana unless the ship’s schedule leaves ample time and return transportation has been secured.

Practical Tips

  • Confirm the exact docking point and all-aboard time before leaving, as riverfront arrangements can vary.
  • Check museum schedules in advance; historic-house tours may not operate every day and can require reservations.
  • Prearrange taxis or private transportation rather than relying on finding a vehicle at the waterfront.
  • Wear comfortable shoes for uneven sidewalks, slopes and park paths.
  • Allow a larger return margin after visiting Olana, Kaaterskill Falls or any mountain destination.
