Cruise ships normally anchor offshore and tender passengers directly to Champagne Beach, where swimming, relaxing and browsing local stalls can fill an easy port day. Reaching the wider attractions of Espiritu Santo requires pre-arranged transport or an organized excursion.

Best Ways to Spend the Call

Champagne Beach

Recommended time: 2–4 hours. This is the simplest independent option and the main reason ships call at Champagne Bay. The beach has fine white sand, clear shallow water and natural shade around parts of the shoreline.

Swimming and wading are generally the principal activities. Light snorkeling may be possible near the rocky edges of the bay when conditions are suitable, although this is better treated as a beach swim with optional snorkeling rather than a major reef excursion. Bring your own equipment if snorkeling is important, as rentals should not be assumed.

Local Market and Beach Stalls

On cruise days, local residents commonly set up stalls selling handicrafts, clothing, drinks and simple food. Facilities are basic, so carry small-denomination cash and do not depend on card payments or ATMs.

Blue Hole Excursion

Recommended time: About 3–5 hours, depending on the site and itinerary. Espiritu Santo is known for exceptionally clear freshwater blue holes surrounded by tropical vegetation. Nanda, Riri and Matevulu are among the better-known locations, but they are spread along the island’s east-coast road and are not practical to reach on foot from the tender landing.

An organized or pre-arranged tour is preferable because access may cross private land, admission arrangements vary, and reliable return transport is essential. Some itineraries combine a blue hole swim with additional time at Champagne Beach.

Port Olry

Port Olry is approximately 13 km (8.1 mi) north of Champagne Beach and normally requires around 20 minutes by vehicle. The village offers another attractive beach, coastal scenery and simple waterfront dining. Allow roughly 3–4 hours for the return journey and an unhurried visit.

This is feasible independently only with dependable round-trip transport. A combined Champagne Beach, blue hole and Port Olry itinerary is better suited to a longer call and an organized tour.

Espiritu Santo Island Highlights

Longer excursions may include village visits, river canoeing, blue holes or World War II sites near Luganville. These attractions are widely separated, so avoid trying to combine too many stops during a short call. Luganville is roughly 50 km (31.1 mi) from Champagne Beach and is not a practical casual outing without arranged transport.

Easy Self-Guided Beach Walk

Route: Tender landing – central Champagne Beach – shaded market area – northern end of the bay – return along the shoreline.

• Distance: Approximately 1.5 km (0.9 mi), depending on the landing point and how far you follow the beach.
• Pure walking time: About 25–35 minutes.
• Recommended total time: 1.5–3 hours with swimming and stops.
• Difficulty: Easy, although walking on soft sand requires more effort than a paved route.

1. Begin at the tender landing and walk toward the main stretch of white sand.
2. Pass the temporary market and refreshment stalls operating during cruise calls.
3. Continue along the waterline, looking for a suitable swimming area away from tender movements.
4. Walk toward the quieter end of the bay for coastal views and photographs.
5. Return by the same shoreline route, allowing time to collect belongings before joining the tender queue.

Do not continue onto isolated roads or attempt to walk to distant attractions. Shade can be limited on exposed sections, and the wider island is best explored by vehicle.

• Bring reef-safe sun protection, drinking water, swimwear and footwear suitable for hot sand and uneven ground.
• Facilities are simple; passengers needing step-free access should check the tender and beach-landing arrangements with the cruise line.
