Chios Island (port locode GRJKH) is located in in Aegean Sea (Eastern Mediterranean) and ranked 5th largest in Greece, with land area approx 843 km2 (325 mi2) and population around 53,000. The island is approx 7 km (4 mi) off mainland Turkey (Anatolian coast), separated from Turkey by Cesme Strait.
The island forms a separate municipality within the Chios regional unit (part of Greece's North Aegean region). Island's principal port is Chios Town. Chios Island is notable for the export of mastic gum and is nicknamed "The mastic island". The most popular tourist sites are the island's medieval villages and Nea Moni monastery (11th century, UNESCO site).
The island is accessible via domestic flights (Chios National Airport, tour boats and ferries. High-speed ships offer daily passenger shipping services from mainland Greece (Piraeus-Athens, Kavala). Fast ferries connect Chios with the islands Mykonos, Paros, Syros, Naxos, Ikaria (Evdilos, Agios Kirikos), Samos (Karlovassi), Lesbos (Mytilene), Limnos, Patmos, Psara, Sifnos (Vathi), Fournoi, Oinousses.
Most inter-island ferry services are provided by Hellenic Seaways. Some crossings are operated by the Greek company Blue Star Ferries and the Turkish companies Erturk Lines and Turyol (both linking Chios with Cesme Turkey). After the island is named the cruise ship Blue Star Chios.
Chios Airport is located south of Chios Town and links the island with mainland Greece (Athens, Thessaloniki), also with the islands Lesbos and Samos, and seasonally - with Slovenia (Ljubljana) and Poland (Katowice).

The following map shows all ports and villages on the island.
At a Glance
Independent sightseeing: Easy in Chios Town; independent travel elsewhere requires advance transport planning. The medieval villages and major island sights are better reached by taxi, rental car or an organized excursion.
Chios is a large island, so a short port call is best spent either exploring the town on foot or choosing one focused trip outside it. Trying to combine the town, southern villages, a monastery and a beach usually involves too much driving.
Getting from the Cruise Port
Smaller cruise ships may berth inside Chios’s main harbor, close to the customs area and waterfront. Larger ships may anchor offshore and bring passengers ashore by tender. The exact arrangement depends on the ship and port conditions.
The harbor is integrated into Chios Town, also called Chora. From the passenger landing area, the waterfront, central market streets and entrance to Chios Castle are generally within a short walk. A shuttle is normally unnecessary for town sightseeing.
Taxis are the most practical option for attractions outside town. Urban buses serve nearby districts, including Kampos and Karfas, while intercity buses connect some villages. However, departures can be infrequent and may not fit a cruise schedule, especially on weekends. Confirm the current timetable and return service before leaving.
Best Ways to Spend Your Time
Explore Chios Town and the Castle
Allow: 2–4 hours. Difficulty: Easy to moderate. Best for: Independent visitors.
Walk along the harbor promenade and enter the old fortified quarter through the main gate of Chios Castle. Inside are narrow residential lanes, historic buildings and small squares. Continue through the commercial center toward Vounaki Square, Aplotaria Street, the cathedral and the Koraes Library area.
This is the safest choice for a short call because no road transport is required and passengers remain close to the ship or tender landing.
See the Mastic Villages of Southern Chios
Allow: 4–6 hours. Difficulty: Easy walking, with considerable driving. Best for: Organized excursion, prearranged taxi or rental car.
Pyrgi is known for the black-and-white geometric decoration covering many building facades. Mesta, approximately 35 km (21.7 mi) from Chios Town, is a compact fortified medieval village with covered passages and narrow lanes.
A practical trip normally visits one or two villages rather than attempting the entire south of the island. The Chios Mastic Museum near Pyrgi can be added when its opening day and hours match the call. Public buses are less suitable because limited frequencies can leave little flexibility for returning to the port.
Visit Nea Moni and Kampos
Allow: 3–4.5 hours. Difficulty: Easy to moderate. Best for: Taxi, private tour or organized excursion.
Nea Moni is an important Byzantine monastery and part of a UNESCO World Heritage property. Its mosaics are the principal reason to visit. The approach crosses the island’s hilly interior, so it is not a walking trip from the port.
Kampos, south of town, has narrow lanes bordered by high stone walls, citrus estates and historic mansions. It works well as a second stop, although much of the area’s architecture is viewed from lanes rather than from inside private estates.
Relax at Karfas Beach
Allow: 3–5 hours. Difficulty: Easy. Best for: Taxi or a carefully timed local bus.
Karfas is a developed sandy beach area about 5 km (3.1 mi) south of Chios Town. It is more practical for a cruise visit than the island’s remote beaches because it is relatively close to the harbor and has visitor facilities nearby.
Arrange the return journey in advance or verify the bus schedule before leaving. Walking from the cruise port is not recommended because of the distance, heat and roadside conditions.
Self-Guided Walking Tours
Easy Town and Castle Walk
Route: Harbor landing area – waterfront promenade – Chios Castle gate – castle lanes – Vounaki Square – Aplotaria Street – cathedral and Koraes Library area – harbor.
Distance: Approximately 2.5 km (1.6 mi). Pure walking time: About 40 minutes. Recommended total: 2–3 hours.
The waterfront and modern center are largely level. Inside the castle, expect uneven paving and occasional narrow sections. Return directly through the town center to the harbor, keeping extra time if tender boats are being used.
Moderate Castle and Windmills Walk
Route: Harbor – Chios Castle – northern waterfront – four historic windmills – return along the coast to the harbor.
Distance: Approximately 4.5 km (2.8 mi) round trip. Pure walking time: About 1 hour 10 minutes. Recommended total: 2.5–3.5 hours.
The route is mostly level but has limited shade and exposed coastal sections. Comfortable footwear, water and sun protection are useful. This walk is better suited to passengers who have already seen the central town or prefer a longer waterfront route.
Practical Tips
- Check whether the ship is docking or tendering, as tender operations reduce usable time ashore.
- Do not rely on an unverified bus connection for a distant village or monastery. Confirm both outbound and return departures before travel.
- Reserve a taxi, rental car or excursion in advance when planning to visit southern Chios; vehicles may be limited when a ship is in port.
- Expect strong sun and limited shade in summer, particularly along the waterfront and in village squares.
- Churches and monasteries require respectful clothing, with shoulders and knees covered.
- Allow a generous return margin for island road travel and an additional margin when tenders are operating.
