Donegal Town offers a compact combination of castle sightseeing, waterfront walks and local shops. Easy independently once in the town centre, it suits passengers who want a relaxed visit without a full-day excursion. Beaches and the wider county require transport.

Getting to Donegal Town

Confirm your ship’s actual arrival port and passenger landing arrangements before planning. Donegal Town and Killybegs are separate places; a cruise advertised as visiting Donegal may use Killybegs as its gateway. Do not assume that the town’s sightseeing pier is your ship’s landing point.

If your ship berths at Killybegs, allow approximately 35–45 minutes each way by road to Donegal Town. A ship excursion or prearranged return taxi is the simplest approach. Public transport requires checking the day’s outward and return connections carefully and is less convenient for a short call.

Once dropped near the Diamond, Donegal’s central square, the castle, abbey ruins and waterfront are within walking distance. Follow the ship’s instructions for any port shuttle or tender service; arrangements depend on the call.

Best Ways to Spend Your Time

Donegal Castle and the town centre

Allow 2–3 hours for Donegal Castle, the Diamond and a café or shopping stop. The restored castle beside the River Eske is the main indoor attraction; allow approximately 45–60 minutes inside. Its upper rooms involve stairs, so visitors with limited mobility should check access before buying admission.

The surrounding streets are suitable for independent exploring, with tweed, knitwear and craft shops close together. Check castle opening arrangements and last admission for your visit date.

Donegal Bay Waterbus

The sightseeing waterbus departs from Donegal Town pier for an approximately 75–80-minute trip through the bay, passing islands and shoreline scenery. It is a practical addition to a town visit when a sailing fits your available time.

Allow around 2 hours including boarding, and confirm the sailing and return time before purchasing tickets. Departures depend on operating conditions; wildlife sightings are not guaranteed. Passengers returning to Killybegs must also allow for their road transfer.

Bank Walk and the estuary

For a quieter outdoor option, follow the Bank Walk through woodland overlooking the estuary. Allow approximately 45–75 minutes for a leisurely walk, with the option to turn back sooner. Wear shoes with grip: shaded paths can be wet and slippery after rain.

This works well alongside the castle and lunch, without committing to a countryside excursion.

Rossnowlagh Beach

With a prearranged taxi, Rossnowlagh offers a broad sandy beach for a walk and sea views. Allow roughly 20–25 minutes each way from Donegal Town and 2–3 hours overall. Arrange collection before leaving the vehicle.

This is an independent outing with some transport planning. Wind, rain and Atlantic surf can limit its appeal; swimming should depend on local conditions and lifeguard advice. Add any transfer between Donegal Town and your ship separately.

Self-Guided Walking Route

Donegal Town heritage loop — easy, with optional indoor visits

Start and finish: Donegal Town pier, or join at the Diamond if arriving by transfer. Distance: approximately 2 km (1.2 mi). Pure walking time: 30–40 minutes. Recommended total: 2–3 hours, including the castle and short stops.

1. Donegal Town pier: Begin with views over the estuary and check waterbus departures if considering a later sailing.
2. Donegal Abbey ruins: Walk to the waterfront ruins and burial ground. Allow a short look around, taking care on uneven ground.
3. The Diamond: Return towards the central square for the town’s main shops and cafés.
4. Donegal Castle: Follow Castle Street to the entrance and visit if opening times suit.
5. River Eske bridge: Pause for views of the river and castle, keeping pavements clear.
6. Donegal Railway Museum: Continue to the old station on Tyrconnell Street. An optional visit adds approximately 30–45 minutes.
7. Return to the Diamond and pier: Retrace your way through the centre to your agreed pickup point.

The route uses mostly paved town streets, with road crossings and some narrow pavements. The abbey grounds are uneven, and the castle interior includes stairs. The walking estimate excludes transport to and from the town.

When an Organized Excursion Makes Sense

Organized excursion recommended for Sliabh Liag, also called Slieve League. The cliffs require a substantial road outing from Donegal Town, followed by access arrangements and time at the viewpoints. Choose a tour matched to your ship’s call rather than trying to combine them casually with town sightseeing.

Check how much uphill walking the excursion includes. Exposed viewpoints can be windy, and low cloud can obscure the cliffs. A town visit is the more flexible choice in poor weather or during a short call.

Practical Tips

• Choose the town and one additional activity rather than combining the castle, boat trip, beach and a distant excursion.
• Prebook return transport for independent trips outside town; do not depend on finding a taxi at a rural attraction.
• Carry a waterproof layer and wear comfortable shoes with grip.
• Work backwards from the ship’s all-aboard or last-tender time. Leave a generous margin for rural roads, weather, boarding procedures and any transfer back to Killybegs.
