Florence AL (port locode USFLO) is a Tennessee River/Ohio River cruise port and city in Alabama USA (Lauderdale County) with population around 40,000.
The city is located on two artificial lakes (Wilson and Pickwick), which reservoirs were created by damming the Tennessee River - by Wilson Dam (1924-opened) and Pickwick Dam (1938-opened).
Florence is best known for having Alabama's oldest college (UNA-University of North Alabama/1830-founded as "LaGrange College") and also as the principal city of the Florence-Muscle Shoals Metro (population around 200,000).
As a cruise port, Florence AL was included in the 2022 schedule of one of the USA's largest river cruise companies - AQSC-American Voyages/Queen Steamboat Co.
The Next table shows American Duchess ship's 7-night/8-day itinerary that visits Florence. Prices started from ~USD 2500 per person with double occupancy.

Annual festivals held in Florence include Sam Phillips Music Celebration (January), UNA Film Festival (April), Arts Alive (May), The Spirit of Freedom Celebration (July), W.C. Handy Music Festival (July-August). Other popular annual events are the Trail of Tears Remembrance Motorcycle Ride (September), Alabama Renaissance Faire (October, held in Wilson Park).

Both US highways are carried by the O'Neal Bridge which interlinks Florence with Sheffield (Colbert County). Northwest Alabama Regional Airport (in Colbert County) serves commercial and general aircraft. Boutique Air provides regularly scheduled daily flights linking Florence to the capital cities of Georgia (Atlanta) and Tennessee (Nashville).
Exploring Florence During a Cruise Call
Independent with some planning or transport. Florence, Alabama, offers a manageable downtown, small museums and Tennessee River scenery. Downtown is easy to explore on foot once you get there; the recording studios associated with the Muscle Shoals sound require road transport and attention to tour times.
Getting from the Riverboat to the Sights
Riverboats use docking facilities at McFarland Park on the Tennessee River. Confirm your ship’s exact landing and passenger exit before planning your route. This is a riverside park setting rather than a downtown cruise terminal.
For downtown sightseeing, arrange a taxi or rideshare, or use a cruise transfer if one is offered. Local rideshare services operate, but allow time for a driver to reach the landing and arrange the return before venturing farther afield. Do not assume a shuttle or taxi rank will be waiting.
McFarland Park is suitable for a local stroll. For walking into town, ask onboard staff or the park’s visitor center about the route from your actual berth; park roads and the approach to downtown make this less straightforward than the downtown walk itself.
Best Ways to Spend Your Time
Downtown Florence, Wilson Park and Local Museums
Allow 2–3 hours after your transfer for Court Street’s independent shops, a café stop and the streets around Wilson Park. Add Pope’s Tavern Museum for local history or the Kennedy-Douglass Center for the Arts for exhibitions, depending on opening hours. This is the easiest option for independent sightseeing without committing to a timed tour.
Frank Lloyd Wright’s Rosenbaum House
The Rosenbaum House is a good choice for architecture enthusiasts. Interior visits are guided and last approximately 45 minutes; allow 1–1.5 hours at the site for admission, any wait and the tour. Admissions are across the street from the house.
Arrange transport rather than treating it as a stop on the compact downtown circuit. Check the day’s opening arrangements, especially for Monday calls and holidays. Combine it with downtown if time permits, rather than trying to fit in every museum.
Florence Indian Mound and Museum
Allow approximately 45–60 minutes for exhibits about the region’s Indigenous heritage and a look at the adjacent mound. Reaching the top involves steps; visitors who prefer to avoid these can focus on the museum and ground-level views. Arrange a short vehicle transfer or include it in a local guided tour.
Muscle Shoals Recording Studios
Muscle Shoals Sound Studio in Sheffield and FAME Recording Studios in Muscle Shoals are separate attractions across the river from Florence. Neither belongs on a downtown walking itinerary.
Muscle Shoals Sound’s guided visit lasts approximately 45 minutes; FAME’s standard tour lasts approximately one hour. Choose one studio for a shorter call and allow roughly 2–3 hours overall for travel, check-in and the visit. Visiting both requires compatible tour times and a longer stay.
Organized excursion recommended if you want multiple music stops. Independent visits are practical with confirmed admission times and prearranged return transport. FAME remains a working studio, so its tour schedule may not suit every ship’s arrival.
Self-Guided Downtown Walking Route
Easy: approximately 2 km (1.2 mi), with 30–40 minutes of actual walking. Allow 1.5–2.5 hours with browsing and one museum visit. Start after a vehicle transfer to Court Street near Tennessee Street; the distance excludes travel from the ship.
- Court Street at Tennessee Street: begin among the downtown shops and cafés.
- North Court Street: walk north through the main shopping blocks.
- Wilson Park: turn toward the park for a shaded pause.
- Kennedy-Douglass Center for the Arts: check the exhibitions across from the park if open.
- Pope’s Tavern Museum: continue to Hermitage Drive for an optional interior visit.
- Return along Court Street: finish near your starting point for refreshments and your arranged pickup.
The route uses urban sidewalks and crossings, with generally gentle terrain. Older buildings may have entrance steps. Summer heat and humidity can make even this short circuit tiring.
A Quieter Riverfront Option
For a short outing close to the landing, spend 30–90 minutes in McFarland Park. Paved paths around the marina, river views and picnic areas provide an alternative to museums or a vehicle excursion. Ask which paths are most convenient from your gangway and keep clear of boat-launch traffic.
Planning Your Return
- Check museum opening days before leaving: several attractions close on Mondays, and Sunday access is more limited.
- Confirm the ship’s all-aboard time and exact pickup or landing location.
- For independent vehicle trips, aim to reach the landing at least 45–60 minutes before all-aboard, with additional time if transport is uncertain.
- On a short call, choose downtown plus one attraction, or one studio visit, rather than combining all the highlights.
