Igoumenitsa is a port town in northwestern Greece. The seaport is principal port of the Epirus and Thesprotia regions, as well as one of the largest Greek ferry ports connecting northwestern mainland Greece with Italy and the Ionian Islands.
Port Igoumenitsa (locode GRIGO) features a large natural harbor along which most of the town spreads.
The Egnatia Highway (length 420 mi / 670 km) serves northern Greece and terminates at Igoumenitsa, making the town a starting point for tourists from Europe and an ending point for trucks from Turkey. Primary aspects of the local economy are agriculture, transport, maritime and tourism.
The town has population around 25,000 and features many shops, offices, cargo storage, Technological Institute, hospital, library, archeological museum, several tennis courses, sports stadium. The town is built on the slopes of the forested mountain and expands around the gulf.
Igoumenitsa is best known for its blue waters and for being surrounded by several forests. Nearby Drepanos Beach is among the area's longest sand beaches. Its length is over 7 km (4 ml).

Igoumenitsa has two ports: The New Port and The Old Port. The New Port is the 2nd busiest passenger port of Greece, following Piraeus, even surpassing the seaports Iraklion (Crete) and Patras (the third and fourth-largest in the country).
The port handles regularly scheduled ferries between Greece and Italy (to Brindisi). These are passenger and car ferryboats operated by Hellenic Mediterranean Lines (HML). Ferries stop here before crossing the Adriatic Sea and vice versa. SUPERFAST FERRIES and ANEK LINES ships also stop here before going to Italy's Adriatic ports Bari, Venice or Ancona, and on the reverse route.
