Kaniv (port locode UAZUN) is a Dnieper River cruise port and a small city (population around 24,000) in Ukraine's Cherkasy region/province in the country's central part. Kaniv is one of the main Dnieper River ports and a historical town (11th-century founded).
As a travel destination, Kaniv attracts international tourists with the Chernecha Mountain's scenery. Domestic tourists visit the town for the Tarasova Hill (aka Chernecha Hora) where is the grave of Taras Shevchenko-Kobzar (1814-1861, Ukrainian poet, painter, writer and politician). Other popular sites include Arkady Gaidar Museum, WW2 Memorial Park, Park Slavy (Alley of Glory).
The current-day city's economy is based on the Kaniv Hydroelectric Power Plant (state-owned, on Dnieper's Kaniv Reservoir, 1975-completed), agriculture (production of fruits and vegetables), condiments production, milk and cheese production, poultry (production and processing).
As a cruise port, Kaniv is included in the schedule of the MS Dnieper Princess ship. The large riverboat operates a 12-day "Black Sea and Dnjepr" cruisetour itinerary leaving roundtrip from Kyiv (Kiev).
