Kepulauan Karimunjawa Islands (aka Crimon Java Islands) is an archipelago of 27 islands in Java Sea, Indonesia, approx 80 km (50 mi) northwest of Jepara. The islands cover a total area of approx 71 km2 (28 mi2) and have population around 9,000 (living on 5 of the islands).
Most cruises to Karimunjawa Islands visit Pulau Menyawakan Island, famous for its Kura Kura Resort.
Archipelago's population is largely Javanese. The main island is Pulau Karimun (3 km2 / 1 mi2), while the 2nd-largest is Pulau Kemujan (1,4 km2 / 0,5 mi2). In 1988 the islands were declared a national park. In 2011, 22 of the islands were declared marine reserve (Karimunjava National Park). and the other 5 are either controlled by the Indonesian Navy or privately owned.
The major source of income for the locals is fishing, followed by commerce and services. Travel from Java to Karimunjawa is often limited during the rainy season (January-March) as bad weather can bring huge waves to the area. Karimunjawa Islands offer a number of snorkeling destinations, but there is pressure on local resources due to the rapidly expanding tourism industry.
