Kortrijk (aka Courtray) is a Leie/Lys River (Scheldt River) cruise port and city in Belgium's West Flanders province, with population around 80,000. Kortrijk is also part of the Eurometropolis Lille-Kortrijk-Tournai (cross-border metropolitan area with combined population around 2,16 million).
Kortrijk is located on Leie River, approx 42 km (26 mi) southwest of Ghent and approx 25 km (16 mi) northeast of Lille/Rysel. Leie/Lys River (tributary of Scheldt River) has length 202 km (126 mi) and flows through France and Belgium.
The town (Cortoriacum) was founded during the Roman Empire and during the Middle Ages became prosperous by developing a textile industry based on the production of flax (linseed) and wool exported to France and England. The city is best known for the Battle of Courtrai (aka Battle of the Golden Spurs, on July 11, 1302) during the Franco-Flemish War (1297-1305). Popular tourist attractions include museums (Kortrijk 1302, Broelmuseum, National Flax Museum, Groeninge Abbey, Beguinage, Flemish Film, Agriculture, Begijnhofmuseum, Millmuseum, Castle t Hooghe), numerous medieval churches (dating back to the 13th-century), famous architectural landmarks (City Hall, Grote Markt, Broel Towers, Artillery Tower, Stadswaag, Onze-Lieve-Vrouwehospitaal, Baggaertshof with a Botanical Garden).
Three highways link Kortrijk with Ghent-Antwerp-Lille-Paris (E17), with Bruges-Ostend-Tournai-Mons-Charleroi (E403) and with Ypres (A19). Railways link Kortrijk with Bruges, Brussel, Antwerp, Ghent, Ypres. Kortrijk is approx 100 km (60 mi) from Brussels Airport and approx 35 km (22 mi) from Lille Lesquin Airport.
