Lutherstadt Wittenberg is an Elbe River cruise port and town in Germany's Saxony-Anhalt state (Wittenberg district) with population around 45,000.
Among the city's landmarks and best-known tourist attractions is Schlosskirche (14th-century church) where in 1517 Martin Luther (1483-1546) nailed his 95 theses (Disputation on the Power of Indulgences). The building was damaged by fire in 1760, then rebuilt and restored. Its burnt wooden doors were replaced by bronze doors, with the Latin text of Luther's theses engraved. The church has the tombs of Martin Luther and Philipp Melanchthon (protestant theologian). Other famous buildings are Marienkirche (14th-century church) and Lutherhaus (Martin Luther's house/museum).
