Mar del Plata is a port city in Argentina's Buenos Aires Province, with population around 620,000. The city is on the Atlantic Ocean coast and approx 415 km (260 mi) to the south of Buenos Aires (the country's capital and principal port). This is the road distance (via Highway RP2) with drive time around 4,5 hours.

Port Mar del Plata (locode ARMDQ) is also one of Argentina's main fishing ports, while the city is considered the country's biggest seaside resort travel destination. This explains why the tourism industry is the city's economy's largest contributor, benefiting from a modern infrastructure with luxury hotels, cafes and restaurants, premium golf courses, casinos, great nightlife (bar clubs), large annual festivals/street fiestas, great beaches and other tourist attractions. The second-largest is the fishing industry (commercial fishing and fish processing). The port also houses two large-capacity shipyards.

Astor Piazzolla Airport (aka Mar del Plata Airport) serves regular daily flights (by Aerolineas Argentinas/the country's flag carrier/principal airline) connecting to Buenos Aires City.
