Milazzo is a port town and the 3rd-largest city in Messina province (Sicily Island, Italy), following Messina and Barcellona Pozzo di Gotto. The town is on Sicily's northwestern coast and has total area approx 24 km2 (9 ml2) and population around 32,000.
Milazzo is an important center of Messina Metro Area (also including Reggio Calabria). The town is located at the base of a peninsula jutting into Tyrrhenian Sea, approx 43 km (27 ml) from Messina. Regularly scheduled ferries connect Milazzo with Aeolian Islands (an archipelago north of Sicily), Palermo and Naples. All these ferry services are provided by the company Liberty Lines Fast Ferries. Daily crossings are offered to the islands Stromboli, Rinella, Vulcano, Lipari, Salina, Alicudi, Panarea, Filicudi, Ginostra, Vibo Valentia.
The town's economy is based on agriculture and commercial fishing.
Town's best-known tourist attractions and landmarks include Castello di Milazzo (castle and citadel), churches (Mount Carmel, Francis of Paola, St Anthony of Padua, Holy Crucifix). Castle's construction was started by the Arabs and later enlarged by the Normans. The castle was restored by Holy Roman Emperor Frederick II (reign 1212-1250). Stone walls and round towers were constructed by Alfonso V (King of Aragon, reign 1416-1458). Close to the castle are the ruins of a 14th-century palace (aka "the old cathedral").
