Monuriki Island (Fiji)

Following the Mutiny on the Bounty (April 28, 1789), William Bligh (1754-1817, British officer) sailed through northern Fiji Islands. On his way to Kupang (capital of East Nusa Tenggara province, Indonesia) he became the first European to visit Fiji's Atolls Islands. This is why the sea area north of Viti Levu Island (including Monuriki), is named "Bligh Water".

Monuriki Island was the filming location for the movie "Cast Away" (2000), starring Tom Hanks. Following the movie release, the island became a very popular tourist destination. In the movie plot, the island is described as being located approx 970 km / 600 mi south of the Cook Islands, though there is no land between the southernmost Cook Islands (Mangaia) and Antarctica. During the production, 100+ of the movie team lived on Monuriki.
