Saipan Island is the largest of the Mariana Islands/aka Marianas (USA commonwealth/unincorporated dependent territory) located in the western Pacific Ocean. The island covers a total area of approx 115 km2 (45 mi2) and has population around 50,000.
Cruise ships to Saipan Island dock/anchor at Obyan Port (locode MPSPN) on the southern coast.
Saipan is Marianas 2nd largest (following Guam) and is located approx 190 km (120 mi) north of Guam and approx 9 km (6 mi) northeast of Tinian Island (separated via Saipan Channel).
Saipan has length 19 km (12 mi) and width 9 km (6 mi). Its highest elevation point (Mt Tapochau) is 480 m (1560 ft) above sea level. Unlike many Mariana Islands mountains, Tapochau is not an extinct volcano, but a limestone formation.
The Commonwealth's center of government is in Capitol Hill. Since the entire island is a single municipality, most issues term Saipan as the Commonwealth's capital.
Travel to/from the island is available mainly via flights served by Saipan International Airport. Until 2010 was operated ferry service between Tinian and Saipan. Taxis are available within the island. Its main roads are named Beach Road (along the western coast) and Middle Road (largest, through the island's central part). Both roads link all the villages on Saipan. The island has several hotels, residences, offices, shops - all located near the roads.
