Salaverry is a port town located approx 14 km (9 mi) southeast of Trujillo City - Peru's 3rd largest by population (around 790,000) and 2nd largest as metro area (around 950,000). Port Salaverry was rebuilt in the 1960s and has capacity to handle world's largest vessels - including container ships and largest cruise liners.

Town's population is around 14,000. Close to Trujillo are Moche ruins - former imperial palace and mausoleum, the Pyramid of the Sun and the Pyramid of the Moon.

Tourists can also visit the ruins of Chan Chan - pre-Inca Chimú empire's capital and the world's largest adobe complex (14th century). It consisted of 10 walled citadels (quadrangles), each with pyramid-shaped temples, cemeteries, rainwater reservoirs, gardens.

Other notable sites are Huaca el Dragon, which dates from AD 1000-1470, and El Brujo, the ceremonial centre for ten cultures. Travelers can also visit the picturesque Huanchaco village with its good surf beaches and "totora caballitos" reed boats.
