Salt Island BVI (UK Virgin Islands)

Salt Island is one British Virgin Islands located approx 8 km (5 mi) southeast of Tortola (Road Town). The island is best known for the packet steamer wreck RMS Rhone (sank here in October 1867). Most of its crew died, and of them were buried in a mass grave (located at short walking distance from the island's main beach). Rhone shipwreck is considered one of the best Caribbean scuba diving and snorkeling sites.

The island is almost uninhabited. there are only 4 houses and under 10 permanent residents, who pay annual rent (to UK's Queen) in the amount of 1 one-pound bag of salt. Salt Island BVI is often visited by private yachts and occasionally by smaller-sized luxury cruise ships.
