Sommaroy Island is located in the western part of Tromso Municipality (Troms county, Norway). The island covers a total area of approx 1 km2 (0,4 mi2) and has population under 500. Sommaroy is approx 36 km (22 mi) west of Tromso (mainland Norway) and is a very popular tourist destination due to its scenery and white sand beaches. The island is connected to Kvaloya island via Sommaroy Bridge.
Sommaroy is a fishing community that covers the entire isle plus part of the neighboring Hillesoya Island and many smaller surrounding isles. It has a fishing fleet and fish processing facilities. Tourism is also important, so a hotel and rental cabins are available.
The main produce is herring - processed and packed in a modern processing plant, also freezing fish for international export.
The original settlement was on Hillesoya island, but was moved to Sommaroy in the early-20th-century. Hillesoya is popular for its beaches and plenty of warm and shallow coves.
