Sommaroy Island is located in the western part of Tromso Municipality (Troms county, Norway). The island covers a total area of approx 1 km2 (0,4 ml2) and has population under 500. Sommaroy is approx 36 km (22 ml) west of Tromso (mainland Norway) and is a very popular tourist destination due to its scenery and white sand beaches. The island is connected to Kvaloya island via Sommaroy Bridge.
- Sommaroy is a fishing community that covers the entire isle plus part of the neighboring Hillesoya Island and many smaller surrounding isles. It has fishing fleet and fish processing facilities. Tourism is also important, so a hotel and rental cabins are available.
- The main produce is herring - processed and packed in a modern processing plant, also freezing fish for international export.
- The original settlement was on Hillesoya island, but was moved to Sommaroy in early 20th century. The island is popular for its beaches and plenty of warm and shallow coves.
