Port Vizhinjam is the cargo port serving Trivandrum (aka Thiruvananthapuram) - the largest city in India's Kerala State (followed by Kochi) with population around 960,000. It is also Kerala's only designated Metropolitan City (metropolis), with metro population around 1,7 million. Trivandrum was a major trade port serving India's export of sandalwood, ivory and spices.

With around 70-80% of Kerala State's software exports, Trivandrum is an IT hub with great importance. Its Technopark and Technocity make it a one of state's largest research and academic centres. Tourism is another major industry, served also by the nearby beach towns Varkala and Kovalam. Among best known toursit attractions are Padmanabhaswamy Temple (circled by East Fort), Azhimala Beach Resort, Shankumugham Beach, Kappil Beach, Kovalam Beach, Neyyar Wildlife Sanctuary (near Neyyar Dam), Agasthyamalai Biosphere Reserve (rain forests), Braemore Marigold Estate, Kallar caste, Edava Nadayara (lake and canal waterway), Poovar (tourist town), Anchuthengu and Anjengo Fort, Ponmudi (hill station), Varkala Cliff (beach).

The city is served by Trivandrum International Airport (approx 14 km / 9 ml from Vizhinjam) and Trivandrum Central (railway station at the same distance).

Port Vizhinjam

Vizhinjam is a natural, deep-water harbour port serving Thiruvananthapuram metro region and its capital city Trivandrum. Kovalam Beach is just 3 km (2 ml) away. Vizhinjam is also a resort town with population around 20,000.

Vizhinjam Seaport is an international multi-purpose cargo port (currently under development) serving passenger ships (ferries and cruise vessels, as well as container ships and other cargo carriers.

In Vizhinjam harbour there is an unique technology testing facility - wave energy plant. It converts waves power to electricity by using Oscillating Water Columns (wave energy converting technology). The generated from the sea electricity is fed into town's power grid. The plant (commissioned in 1991) includes 2 power generations.

Large cruise ships to Trivandrum dock at the deep-water Port Vizhinjam - located approx 16 km (10 ml) southeast of the city. Drive distance is around 20 min. Regular buses link Vizhinjam (bus stations East Fort and Thampanoor) to Thiruvananthapuram. Taxis are also available at these stations.
