Veere DI (translated from Dutch as "ferry") was founded in 1281 by Wolfert I van Borselen (1245-1299) as ferry port. It received town status in 1335. Current municipality was last expanded in 1997 by adding several neighboring towns.

The region is annually visited by around 4 million tourists. Main attractions include Walcheren island's beaches and yacht marinas.
