Port of Galway is the most central on the West Coast of Ireland. It lies in the eastern corner of Galway Bay. Pending approval, the harbour may see major changes, in case €1.5 billion development plan goes ahead. Galway Harbour can be used by ships up to 10,000 tonnes deadweight (DWT). The inner dock accommodates up to 9 vessels at one time.

Regular freight and passenger ferry services operate between Galway city and the tourist destination of Aran Islands, home to World Heritage Site Dun Aonghasa. The islands feature regular links with the cities of Doolin and Rossaveal, that are closer but much smaller.

In 2009 major work in city's harbour area was carried out to accommodate the stopover of Volvo Ocean Race, which was one of the biggest events ever to visit the city of Galway. It returned in June 2012 with the finale of the race, which was unprecedented in the history of Volvo Ocean Race.

In 2020 Galway will be European Capital of Culture, alongside Rijeka Croatia. Famous as the Cultural Heart of Ireland, the city is renowned for its numerous festivals, celebrations, events and vibrant lifestyle. Every November, the city hosts Tulca Festival of Visual Arts. On December 1, 2014 Director General of UNESCO announced Galway's official designation as UNESCO City of Film.
