  Port Map

The picturesque fishing port Kodiak is located on Chiniak Bay on the Kodiak Island's northeastern coast. Places of interest include the Russian Orthodox Church and the Baranof Museum. Established in 1792 by Russian-American Company, Kodiak AK was first known as Paul's Harbor (Pavlovsk Gavan). It was Russian America's colonial capital until Alexander Baranof moved it to Sitka AK.

Kodiak Island (on the south coast of Alaska) is separated from the mainland by the Shelikof Strait. Kodiak is the USA's 2nd largest (after Hawaii and before Puerto Rico) and the world's 80th largest island, with a total area of 9311 km2 (3595 ml2), length of 160 km (99 miles) and width of 16-97 km (10-60 ml). The other (in the "USA top 10") largest Alaskan islands are Prince of Wales Island, Chichagof Island, St Lawrence Island, Admiralty Island, Nunivak Island, Unimak Island and Baranof Island.

The island's largest community is the port town Kodiak (population around 6,500). The island is located in the Gulf of Alaska to the south of Anchorage and Kenai Peninsula. The mountainous island is covered by dense growth of high grass, alder thickets, berry bushes and wildflowers. Scoured by glaciers, Kodiak Island is nearly devoid of trees. Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge covers 75% of the island and is the habitat of carniverous Kodiak, or Alaskan, brown bear.

To the southwest of Kodiak are located the island groups Trinity Islands (separated by Sitkinak Strait) and next are Semidi Islands. Both groups administratively belong to the Kodiak Island Borough. The Borough has a total area of 12022 ml2 (31137 km2), of which land area 6550 ml2 (16964 km2) and marine area 5472 ml2 (14172 km2), and total population of around 14,000.

Kodiak Island Alaska was included as port of call in the Northwest Passage cruises of the following passenger ships:

  • Crystal Serenity - 32-days itinerary from Seward Alaska to NYC New York (2016 - August 16 to September 16)

  • Seven Seas Navigator - 63-days itinerary from Miami Florida to Montreal Quebec (2017 - June 17 to August 18). The voyage was soon cancelled due to bad weather forecasts for July.
  • Note: All Northwest Passage ship transits are assisted by a Canadian icebreaker or other vessel with an ice-strengthened hull.
