Newport is a cathedral and university city, as well as unitary authority area situated in south east Wales. It's located on the River Usk near its confluence with Severn estuary, around 19 km (12 miles) northeast of Cardiff. In 2011 census it is the 3rd largest city in Wales, with a population of 145,700 and urban population of 306,840. The city forms part of Cardiff-Newport metropolitan area with 1,097,000 inhabitants.
Newport's been a port since medieval times, when the Normans built Newport Castle. The town outgrew earlier Roman town Caerleon, immediately upstream, and gained first charter in 1314. Newport grew significantly in 19th century, when its port became focus of coal export from the eastern valleys of South Wales. Newport was Wales' biggest coal-exporting port until the rise of Cardiff from the 1850s. It was the site of the last big-scale armed insurrection in Britain, Newport Rising led by the Chartists in 1839.
When the docks declined in importance during the 20th century, Newport remained an important engineering and manufacturing centre. In 2002 it was granted city status. In 2010 Newport hosted the Ryder Cup. The city was the venue of 2014 NATO summit.
Newport RI became a well established cruise port of call on transit itineraries during Canada's Fall Foliage season (September-October). Often, the port has scheduled 2 ships per day, including large ships (like Cunard's RMS Queen Mary 2). In Fall 2017, the port had scheduled 42 ship calls. Newport is popular for its history, architecture, culture, culinary (Rhode Island Food Tour).
