Porto Santo Stefano is located on the Monte Argentario's northern side, a hilly and large promontory situated in southern Tuscany. It is the biggest town in the region, served by ferries to Tuscan islands. Popular primarily with its well-off Italians, this area boasts several relatively unspoilt beaches and a nature reserve. Long ago this Tuscany sizeable outpost was an island. It later became joined to mainland by 3 sand bars, which are today separated by lagoons and covered in woodland. On the northern side is the small and beautiful harbour settlement of Porto Ercole, while Orbetello is situated on the central isthmus, between the pair of lagoons. The southern connecting isthmus is pine-clad reserve called Tombolo, with a path for cyclists and walkers along its length. From here tourists can access one of the quietest beaches along the coast.
